Site & Blog Policies
An introduction to site policies, rules, and etiquette.
The details of our CampusProgress.org site policies and rules are in our Terms of Use. Here’s a discussion of some key points about interacting with the site. Please remember that this discussion is not a substitute for reading the full Terms of Use.
Signing Up for Certain Features
CampusProgress.org welcomes anyone to visit the site and check out our various pages. In order to use certain site features, like contests and polls, we require that you sign up, giving us your email address and zip code.
Registering with the site and creating a CampusProgressPage. In order to post comments about, or to rate, blog entries and various other content, you must register with the site, creating an account and password and giving us some additional information.
When you register with the site, we will automatically create for you a CampusProgressPage, where, if you wish, you can create blog entries and/or share information about yourself. Campus Progress seeks to use these pages to create a campus-centered community of people interested in discussing issues and progressive ideas.
The most widely read (and liked) blogs are listed on the main Campus Progress Blog page. That page also features blog entries from students – our Campus Correspondents — whose work we know and like already. As our community grows, we’ll be looking for more students to write for our main blog, and individual CampusProgressPages will be the first place we look for new talent and fresh voices.
Site Rules and Site Etiquette
CampusProgress.org members and registered users must follow basic guidelines when writing and commenting on the site. Here are some of them to get you started. Again, this is no substitute for reading the full Terms of Use.
1. Remember where you are and what this site is meant for.
The purpose of the blogs are to encourage discussion on topics related to ideas, issues, campuses, and student activism. It is not an open-air chat forum. It’s great to talk about your own experiences and inject your personality into your writing. But keep focused.
2. All viewpoints are welcome
While this is a site centered on progressive students, we welcome a broad range of viewpoints, so long as they are expressed in a civilized manner.
3. Civilized debate is not an oxymoron; it’s required on this site.
As far as arguing with each other goes, there are a couple of lines we’re drawing in the sand. It’s clear that you won’t always agree with others, and people are going to get into heated discussions sometimes. Petty remarks and harsh language are discouraged, but not forbidden. The following ARE forbidden – for more information about what is forbidden, please see our Terms of Use:
- Threatening, abusing, intimidating, or harrassing another CampusProgress.org user.
- Posting any private information about another person without their consent.
- Posting any content that is unlawful, racist, libelous, defamatory, obscene, or that harrasses particular individuals or groups.
- Using CampusProgress.org for any illegal purpose.
If you do any of these, we will not only delete the comment, but we may also delete your site privileges.
4. We are not free advertising.
Posting entries for no purpose except promoting your own commercial venture is not allowed.
Any accounts that are created for the purpose of posting spam or links to commercial sites will be deleted.
If you’ve written something somewhere else — your student paper, your own blog — that’s relevant to a discussion here, by all means go ahead and link to it. Please do not make diaries that are only a link to your own outside weblog. Students who have their own weblogs can place a link to their site on their CampusProgressPage.
5.Grammar is your bestest friend in the world.
Diaries and comments are expected to follow some basic style etiquette- try as hard as you can to use correct spelling and grammar. DON’T WRITE IN ALL CAPS, don’t use “l33t sp34k,” and don’t end sentences with seventeen exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
