Eligibility

The 2010 Campus Progress National Conference contest (the "Contest") is only open to contestants who are U.S. residents, are 18 years or older at the time of submission, and that have filled out the application for the 2010 Campus Progress National Conference. Additionally, entrants must have received the Contest�s email solicitation or web address directly from Campus Progress (no forwards). Void outside the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Void in Arizona. The Contest is also void where prohibited by law. Additionally, the following individuals are not eligible to enter the Contest: employees, consultants, directors and officers of the Contest Sponsor and each respective parent, subsidiary and affiliated company, (collectively, "Contest Parties"), and immediate family members. The term "immediate family" includes spouses, siblings, parents, children, grandparents, and grandchildren, whether as "in-laws," or by current or past marriage(s), remarriage(s), adoption, co-habitation or other family extension, and any other persons residing at the same household whether or not related.

Contest Sponsor and Administrator

Center for American Progress/Campus Progress, which is located at 1333 H St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20005, is the sponsor and administrator of the Contest ("Sponsor").

Agreement to Official Rules

Participation in this Contest constitutes entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules and Sponsor’s and judges’ decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to this Contest. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein. These Official Rules are subject to change.

Please note: You must agree to the Campus Progress terms of use, located at http://campusprogress.org/about/51/campusprogressorg-terms-of-use, and acknowledge Campus Progress� Privacy Policy, located at http://www.americanprogress.org/aboutus/privacypolicy.html, in order to be eligible to enter the Contest.

LIMIT: Each contestant ("Entrant" or "Contestant") may submit only one entry. Once a submission is submitted it is considered final and may not be modified or edited. Entries will not be returned.

By completing and submitting your application and contest entry, you agree that your entry conforms to the Content Guidelines section below (the "Guidelines and Restrictions") and that Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may reject your entry at any time and for any reason, including if it believes, in its sole discretion, that your entry fails to conform to the Guidelines and Restrictions in any way, fails to conform to Campus Progress� Terms of Use, or otherwise contains prohibited, inappropriate, offensive, infringing or otherwise unacceptable content as determined by Sponsor, in its sole discretion, in which case your entry shall be disqualified from the Contest.

NOTE: You understand and agree that your entry may be posted online and viewed by other people during and after the Contest.

Timing

The Contest begins on April 6, 2010 at 12:00:01 a.m. Eastern Summer Time ("EST"), ends on April 13, 2010 at 11:59:59 p.m. EST (the "Contest Period") and consists of two (2) phases as set forth in the chart below. Sponsor’s computer is the official time-keeping device for the Contest.

General Requirements

Submissions:


 

  • Must write an essay in 360 words or fewer on the following topic:

    Why do you want to attend the 2010 Campus Progress National Conference? What do you hope to gain from the events?  Do you have any relevant work or volunteer experience that would make you a particularly valuable participant?

  • The above essay must be accompanied by a complete 2010 Campus Progress National Conference application submitted by 11:59:59 p.m. EST April 13, 2010.
  • The essay must be in English
  • Must be submitted online or actually received by mail by Campus Progress by 11:59:59 p.m. EST April 13, 2010.

Content Guidelines and Ownership and Rights

Content Restrictions:

The entry must meet the following content restrictions:


  • The entry must not contain material that is inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, tortuous, defamatory, slanderous or libelous;
  • The entry must not contain material that promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age; and
  • The entry must include a fully completed and timely application and essay for the 2010 Campus Progress National Conference.


For all entries:

By submitting an entry, you warrant and represent that:

(a) it is your original work and has been legally created,

(b) it has not been previously published or distributed in any media,

(c) it has not been entered in or won previous contests or awards,

(d) it does not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or other legal or moral rights of any person or entity,

 (f) you own all rights to your entry, including without limitation, copyrights,

(g) publication of the entry via various media including Web posting, will not infringe on any third party rights; and

(h) you will indemnify and hold harmless the Contest Parties from any claims and damages (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from or relating to the breach or alleged breach of your representations and warranties herein, your entry, or your conduct in creating your entry or otherwise in connection with this Contest.

All entries will become the exclusive property of Sponsor, and Sponsor has no obligation to acknowledge or return any entry. By submitting an entry, Entrant irrevocably grants Sponsor and its respective agents an unlimited, worldwide, perpetual, unconditional, gratis license and right to edit, modify, adapt, distribute, stream, post, publish, broadcast, reproduce, encode, store, copy, transmit, publicly display, exhibit, and or otherwise use or reuse (without limitation as to when or to the number of times used) the entry and all elements thereof, in whole or in part, (in each case, as submitted or as edited/modified in any way by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion) in any way, and may use them in any and all media, now or hereafter devised, worldwide in perpetuity, without attribution, compensation, permission or notification to the Entrant, his/her successors or assigns, or any other entity, and without notice, review, or approval from the Entrant or any other party.

Furthermore, although Sponsor is not under any legal or contractual obligation to do so, Sponsor reserves the right to review and/or edit any and all part of an entry deemed by Sponsor, in its sole discretion, to be prohibited, inappropriate, offensive, infringing or otherwise unacceptable. Should Sponsor edit any such elements, Entrant is not relieved from responsibility for compliance with Campus Progressâ�� Terms of Use and these Official Rules. ENTERING A ENRTY IN THIS CONTEST CONSTITUTES THE ENTRANT’S IRREVOCABLE ASSIGNMENT, CONVEYANCE AND TRANSFERENCE TO SPONSOR OF ANY AND ALL RIGHT, TITLE AND INTEREST IN THE ENTRY INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ALL COPYRIGHTS.

Entrants agree to sign all legal forms deemed necessary by Sponsor to establish Sponsor’s ownership of the right, title and interest in and to the entry and of the transferred copyrights and "Moral Rights of Authors" waived under these Official Rules. Entrant must provide fully completed documentation within five (5) days of the date notice or attempted notice is sent. Failure to provide such documents upon request may result in disqualification and the Entrant whose entry receives the next highest score may be deemed the alternate winner for the applicable prize.

Contest Parties are not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, un-intelligible, garbled, delayed, inaccurate or misdirected entries, entries not submitted in accordance with instructions, or entries not received for any reason; all of which will be disqualified. By entering, you acknowledge that Sponsor has no obligation to use or post your submitted entry. Any waiver of any obligation hereunder by Sponsor does not constitute a general waiver of any obligation to Entrants.

Judging to Determine Grand Prize Winners

Entries consist of the full application and essay. All eligible entries received during the Open Call for Entries will be judged by a panel of judges selected and retained by Sponsor, in its sole discretion. This panel will score each eligible Entrant’s entry based on the following criteria in equal weight:


  • Demonstrated interest in progressive issues and organizing
  • Intention to apply the tools learned at the 2010 Campus Progress National Conference to their work on their campus or in their community.
  • Demonstrated involvement with Campus Progress
  • Writing quality


This panel will determine the top five entries, to be known as the potential "Grand Prize Winners." The judges’ decisions are final and binding in all matters relating to this Contest. If Sponsor does not receive a sufficient number of eligible and qualified entries, the number of Grand Prize Winners may be reduced at the discretion of the Sponsor. Sponsor reserves the right not to select any Grand Prize Winners if none of the entries meet minimum judging criteria, at Sponsor’s sole discretion.

To be eligible to be a Grand Prize Winner, the Entrant must agree to be available to travel to Washington, D.C. on the scheduled date for the 2010 Campus Progress National Conference (the �Prize Event,� see below). A potential Grand Prize Winner who is not willing and able to travel to Washington, D.C. on the specified date will be disqualified and the next highest scoring entry will move up and be notified as a Grand Prize Winner, time permitting, and at the sole discretion of the Sponsor.

All Grand Prize Winners will be required to sign and properly execute where lawful, an Affidavit of Eligibility, Compliance with the Rules, Assignment and License, Liability and Publicity Release, and Travel Release. If any documents sent by any means to a potential Grand Prize Winner are returned as undeliverable or if a potential Grand Prize Winner fails to properly execute, notify, and return all documents described herein by the date specified by Sponsor, or if a potential Grand Prize Winner is found not to be eligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules, the potential Grand Prize Winner will be disqualified and the next highest scoring entry will move up and be notified, time permitting, and at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Such substitute Grand Prize Winner will have 5 days to properly execute and return all documents described herein.

The Grand Prize winner will be announced on Sponsor’s website www.campusprogress.org on or about May 1, 2010.

Grand Prize

The Grand Prize Winners (no guests or parents/guardians) will receive round trip transportation to Washington, D.C. (by means elected by Sponsor) and two (2) night hotel stay (one room, double occupancy) at the discretion of Sponsor (the �Grand Prize�). The Grand Prize Winners will also be featured in the event program, be acknowledged on stage for their commitment to progressivism, and have an opportunity to be backstage with the keynote speaker.


Total estimated retail value of the Grand Prize is $600. The Grand Prize is non-transferable; no substitutions or cash awards allowed, except at the sole discretion of the Sponsor, in which case a prize of equal or greater value may be awarded. Grand Prize Winners are responsible for all other costs/fees/expenses associated with the trip, including but not limited to meals, tips, ground transportation, insurance, etc. All details of any prize not specified herein shall be determined solely by the Sponsor.

Taxes

Any valuation of prize(s) stated above is based on available information and the value of any prize awarded to a winner may be reported for tax purposes as required by law. Each winner is solely responsible for reporting and paying any and all applicable taxes related to the prize(s) and paying any expenses associated with any prize that are not specifically provided for in the Official Rules. Each winner must provide Sponsor with valid identification and a valid taxpayer identification number or social security number before any prize will be awarded. Grand Prize Winners may receive an IRS form 1099 at the end of the calendar year and a copy of such form will be filed with the IRS.

Publicity

By participating, where allowed by law, all participants and winner(s) grant the Contest Sponsor exclusive permission to use their names, characters, photographs, voices, and likenesses in connection with promotion of this and other contests and waive any claims to royalty, right, or remuneration for such use.

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY AND RELEASE

The Sponsor and Contest Parties:


  • disclaim all liability for the inability of a participant to complete or continue an entry or submission of an entry due to equipment malfunction, busy lines, inadvertent disconnections, acts beyond our control, or otherwise. For all contests, we disclaim all liability for any delays, misdelivery, loss, or failure in the delivery of any item. We are not responsible for mechanical, technical, electronic, communications, telephone, computer, hardware or software errors, malfunctions or failures of any kind, including: failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed transmission of online entries, traffic congestion on telephone lines, the Internet or at any website or lost or unavailable network connections which may limit an online Entrant’s ability to participate in the Contest, and any injury or damage to an Entrant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participating in or downloading any information necessary to participate in the Contest.
  • are not liable in the event that any portion of the Contest or the Prize Event is cancelled due to weather, fire, strike, acts of war or terrorism, or any other condition beyond their control (a "Force Majeure Event"). Should a Force Majeure Event occur, the Sponsor may, but are not obligated to, exercise reasonable efforts to deliver all or part of the prize or make a reasonable substitution in their sole discretion.


By participating in the Contest, each Entrant waives any and all claims of liability against the Sponsor and Contest Parties, their employees and agents for any personal injury or loss which may occur from the conduct of, or participation in, the Contest, or from participation in the Prize Event and any travel in connection therewith. In order to receive any prize, the winner(s) must sign an official waiver or release and other documentation provided by Sponsor.

Privacy

Any personally identifiable information that you submit will used and collected in accordance with Sponsor’s privacy policy, located at http://www.americanprogress.org/aboutus/privacypolicy.html

Disputes and Jurisdiction

Except where prohibited, Entrant agrees that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by a Court of the District of Columbia.

NOTICE TO ONLINE ENTRANTS: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS, AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. Sponsor is not responsible for faulty, incorrect or mistranscribed phone transmissions, incorrect announcements of any kind, technical hardware or software failures of any kind including any injury or damage to any person’s computer related to or resulting from participating in or experiencing any materials in connection with the promotion, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmission that may limit a user’s ability to participate in the promotion. Sponsor reserves the right to cancel or modify the Contest if fraud, misconduct or technical failures destroy the integrity of the program; or if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration or security of the program as determined by Sponsor/judging agency/administrator, in their sole discretion. In the event of termination, a notice will be posted online and entries will be judged from among all eligible entries received prior to termination. Any damage made to the Contest Site will be the responsibility of the authorized e-mail account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry. Proof of submitting entries will not be deemed to be proof of receipt by Sponsor. Sponsor reserves the right to prohibit the participation of an individual if fraud or tampering is suspected or if the person fails to comply with any requirement of participation as stated herein or with any provision in these Official Rules.
