Ann Coulter Disinvited to Speak at Fordham University; Student Debt Sinks Seniors Too
Ann Coulter Disinvited to Speak at Fordham University In New York. Fordham University’s College Republican chapter invited the controversial conservative media pundit to speak on campus, with the intention of paying her with student fees. However, Fordham President Joseph M. McShane, S.J., chastised the student group stating that “there are many people who can speak to the conservative point of view with integrity and conviction, but Ms. Coulter is not among them.” The campus’ College Republicans then disinvited Coulter citing the “"[t]he size and severity of opposition to the event.” [Huffington Post]
Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York Grants Student Loan Relief To Sandy Victims. On November 9, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) ordered the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) to suspend collection efforts on student loan repayments for borrowers living in counties affected by Superstorm Sandy. Cuomo’s directive suspends or reverses delinquency and default notifications and halts efforts to garnish wages of borrowers in default on their student loans. The Governor’s decision should provide a lot much needed relief because, according to HESC acting President Elsa Magee, “[m]ore than 80 percent of our borrowers with delinquent or defaulted student loans reside in and around the New York City metropolitan area.” [Examiner]
Parents Over 60 Are The Fastest Growing Student Loan Debtors. Parents who took out loans to pay for their kids’ education are now defaulting or are delinquent on their loans. Of the more than 2 million seniors who hold student loan debt, the average owed is $19,225. Adding insult to injury, a growing number of parents are spending part of their Social Security benefits to pay off delinquent student loan debt. [The New York Times]
Ole Miss Holds Candlelight Vigil In Response To Student Protest. After the results of the election were announced last Tuesday, about 400 students at Ole Miss protested, yelling racial slurs and even burning an Obama sign. However, the ugly and disorderly behavior on Tuesday night was countered by a candlelight vigil on Wednesday night calling for racial harmony. More than 700 students attended the vigil and many of which said they were embarrassed by the protests and wanted to demonstrate that the post-election ruckus was not representative of the whole University and 50 years of desegregation that has been recognized throughout the year.
