College Football Stadium Will Be Named After Private Prison Corporation. Florida Atlantic University has just received its largest one-time gift of $6 million for its athletics program—and it’s from a private prison corporation. The corporation, GEO Group, is the second-largest company that runs criminal detention centers in the United States. The partnership between the university and the corporation is unprecedented and raises the question of ethics of college sports sponsorship, as well as the conditions in the prisons that GEO Group currently manages. Helicopter Parenting College Students: Study Shows Ill Effects. Ever feel like your parents are being overprotective, even when you are at college? You’re not alone. A new study conducted by Holly Schiffrin at the University of Mary Washington found that 41 percent of students had mothers that expected them to inform them of their whereabouts frequently, among other statistics that indicated highly-involved parenting of college-age students. The study reported that “helicopter parenting” can result in depression and decreased satisfaction in students. When asked about the balancing act between too much support and too little support, Schiffrin said, “That’s the million-dollar question. Where is the line between being intrusive and being supportive?”[The Christian Science Monitor]

Athlete Loses Eligibility Due to Online Music Videos. Joel Bauman, a student and wrestler at the University of Minnesota, is no longer eligible to wrestle, after refusing to comply with NCAA rules. The rules state that student athletes cannot use their name or image for commercial use, including music. Bauman was notified of this rule and asked to remove music videos that are on the Internet, but he refused. Bauman explained his decision, saying, “When people ask me, you’re choosing music over wrestling, no. I’m choosing inspiring, making a difference, impacting. That’s what it’s all about.” [USA Today College]

University of Alabama Drug Bust Nets 61 Students In Tuscaloosa. On Tuesday, a drug bust led to the arrest of sixty-one University of Alabama students, the majority of which were arrested for the sale and possession of marijuana. Authorities acknowledged that many people view marijuana as a harmless drug; yet, Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson defended the actions of the police, saying, “It’s still illegal to possess it, distribute and traffic it in the state of Alabama.” It is unclear what the University’s sanctions on the students will be, but they could include expulsion.
