Description:
The Truman National Security Project is a national security leadership institute, the nation’s only organization that recruits, trains, and positions a new generation of progressives across America to lead on national security. Our mission is to provide the skills, knowledge, and network to create an influential force of leaders across the country who advance strong progressive national security policy.
We are seeking a Deputy Advocacy Director to help manage political and legislative advocacy efforts, mostly working with our climate change, energy and national security effort, called Operation Free (www.operationfree.net). Over the past six months, Operation Free has built a large, nationwide team of progressive military veterans who work to educate the public about the national security threats posed by climate change, and the security benefits of clean, domestic energy.
The Deputy Advocacy Director will be helping an experienced and nationally recognized team of principals to manage a national coalition of national security leaders, veterans, and security organizations to make a major impact in new and traditional media, host a significant number of events, and shift the debate on Capitol Hill.
The Deputy Advocacy Director will working closely with the Advocacy Director to lead a team of Regional Field Directors, and will be an integral part of a fast-moving, hard-working, and highly-flexible team for a rapidly-growing organization.
Core Qualifications:
- At least two cycles of professional advocacy and/or electoral campaign management
- Expertise in managing a field staff, field organizing, event production, advance, and strategic planning
- Deep understanding of advocacy and public affairs strategies
- Experience with paid, traditional, and online media efforts
- Prior experience with national security and/or climate change issue areas, and military families and Veterans communities is a plus. Candidates with past military service are especially encouraged to apply.
- Strong social media and online organizing skills
- Familiarity with databases, Microsoft Excel, and blast email systems
- Bachelors degree or higher
- Ability to work long hours, including some nights and weekends, and heavy travel
- An excellent sense of humor
Compensation:
$4000/month plus excellent benefits
This is a campaign position that would be guaranteed for four months and could then be extended or expire.
