Fall CP Staff Writer Applications Due July 20
For those of you who love to write and want to get paid to write for Campus Progress, consider applying for the Campus Progress staff writer position. Campus Progress seeks talented writers for part-time staff writer positions at the CampusProgress.org web magazine and blog. Staff writers at Campus Progress:
- Produce at least two reported 800-1,200 word stories per month
- Write at least two 400-600 word blog posts per week
- Pitch several stories and blog posts per week
- Participate in a weekly check-in with a Campus Progress editor
Staff writers are encouraged to establish a beat on a key issue such as environment, health care, college affordability, LGBT issues, immigration, or culture. Previous writing or reporting experience for a campus or other publication is beneficial but not required. Staff writers are paid a stipend per story and blog post they produce. Staff writers can be based anywhere; Campus Progress does not provide office space. This is a part-time contract opportunity, not a full-time permanent staff job.
Campus Progress reaches a large and diverse audience, and its articles frequently get links in major publications and blogs. Campus Progress can be a great launching point for young progressive writers to break into the field of journalism. Writers for Campus Progress have gone on to write for the Huffington Post, The American Prospect, The New Republic, the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Washington Monthly, Bitch magazine, the Daily Beast, The Guardian, The Root, Slate, Yes! magazine, Talking Points Memo, Mother Jones, the Boston Globe, The Nation, Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, and many others.
Campus Progress, part of the Center for American Progress, works to help young people — advocates, activists, journalists, artists — make their voices heard on issues that matter. Through an online magazine and campus journalism organizations, public events, multimedia projects, and grassroots issue campaigns, Campus Progress acts to empower new progressive leaders nationwide as they develop fresh ideas, communicate in new ways, push policy outcomes in a progressive direction, and build a strong progressive movement.
Campus Progress hires staff writers three times per year. Application deadlines for the fall (September-December) are due July 20, 2010.
To apply, please send a résumé, cover letter, and three pitches for Campus Progress reported stories to editor@americanprogress.org with “Staff Writer” in the subject line.
