Grassroots Training Day: Tuesday, July 7th, 2009
The Grassroots Training Day teaches the skills young people need to effectively organize on campus or in their communities. Participants will get invaluable training led by experienced organizers from both Campus Camp Wellstone and Campus Progress.

This session demystifies the strategic planning process and teaches power analysis as the basis for all successful campaign plans. We will explore an exciting case study and discuss the impacts of having a well organized strategic plan.

Strategic Planning
In this breakout, which builds on the Power of Planning session, participants work on writing a grassroots campaign plan, including delving into goals, strategy and tactics; identifying allies and opponents; thinking about organizational structure and developing a timeline. Media Bootcamp
Tired of having your event or campaign ignored by the news while the latest dog fashion show gets front page coverage? Enlist in Campus Progress’ Media Boot Camp, and make sure that you have the know-how to get noticed and get covered in the media. This workshop covers the basics, such as crafting the perfect pitch, writing press releases and media advisories, finding new hooks, nailing the dreaded media interview, getting covered in the blogosphere, and more.

All good organizing is based on strong relationships. In this session, participants go deep into what it means to build relationships based on common interests, issues and values, and practice doing “one-on-ones” as a relationship-building tool.

If you’ve ever had trouble boosting membership or sustaining leadership in your organization, then this training is for you. This training lays out strategies for finding volunteers, growing membership of your group, and ensuring that volunteers and members stick around for the long haul. Topics include volunteer motivation, recruitment tactics, and practices that retain new members stay and encourage involvement. Participants will get to take a quiz to measure their level of burn-out and discuss how to prevent it.

Coalition Building
Students in this session practice developing an effective coalition, learn about self-interest and what brings organizations to the table, and investigates tools for healthy coalition management.

Grassroots Lobbying
The Grassroots Lobbying session talks about the relationship between public policy, advocacy and lobbying, and shares tips on how to be an effective grassroots lobbyist. Participants spend the bulk of this session in small groups, developing and practicing lobby visits with decision-makers who are for, against and neutral on a particular issue.

Leadership development is hugely important to building a progressive community that can WIN—especially among students who turnover constantly. This session delves into positive and negative leadership qualities and behaviors, discusses the importance of multiple kinds of leadership, and introduces concrete strategies for intentional leadership development.

But things can go wrong – have you ever organized an event you thought would be awesome but only 5 people show up? This training lays out all the steps to go through in planning and preparing for an event including picking an appropriate event, steps to planning, and outreach. We’ll end by practicing planning an event.

Putting It All Together: What Success Looks Like
What does success look like? In this discussion we’ll show success stories of the young activist’s role in changing policy and how the different tactics and organizing tools learned at this conference and used in youth organizing have played out in real campaigns and affected real change. We’ll discuss the young person’s role in impacting the legislative process and look at the big picture results from putting all these effective organizing tools together.
