  • Press Secretary, Truman National Security Project

The Truman National Security Project is a national security leadership institute, the nation’s only organization that recruits, trains, and positions a new generation of progressives across America to lead on national security. Our mission is to provide the skills, knowledge, and network to create an influential force of leaders across the country who advance strong progressive national security policy.

We are seeking a Press Secretary to manage ambitious earned media efforts in close coordination with the Media Director, mostly on our climate change, energy and national security effort, called Operation Free (www.operationfree.net). Over the past six months, Operation Free has built a large, nationwide team of progressive Veterans who work to educate the public about the national security threats posed by climate change, and the security benefits of clean, domestic energy.

The Press Secretary will be responsible for developing and implementing a press outreach strategy to make a major impact in new and traditional media. The Press Secretary will be the person most responsible for pitching and advancing press efforts for a significant number of events (often multiple events daily), and travel will be required. The Press Secretary will also coordinate efforts and share responsibilities with coalition partners.

The Press Secretary will be working closely with nationally-recognized political and policy staff and consultants, and will be an integral part of a fast-moving, hard-working, and highly-flexible team in a rapidly-growing organization.

Core Qualifications:

  • At least one year of press experience in a campaign setting, including national and local print media, radio, and television
  • On the record experience is preferred
  • A high level of comfort and a track record of success in pitching both national and local media outlets
  • Experience working with new media efforts, including understanding of blast email systems, facebook, and twitter, and social media
  • Familiarity with advance and event setup
  • Bachelors degree or higher
  • Ability to work long hours, including some nights and weekends, and heavy travel
  • Prior experience with national security and/or climate change issue areas, and military families and Veterans communities is preferred. Candidates with past military service are especially encouraged to apply.
  • An excellent sense of humor

Compensation:

$3000/month plus excellent benefits

This is a campaign position that would be guaranteed for four months and could then be extended or expire.
