Everyday's A Free Food-A-Thon
Zach Marks (Yale University)
My life just hasn’t been the same since the Campus Progress Free-Food-A-Thon this summer. Something’s been missing. Not the sirloin steak, per se, but rather the fact that the sirloin steak was free. There’s an indescribable feeling I get eating a meal I didn’t pay a dime for. Apparently I’m not the only one. An article about freegans, “a growing subculture of p... More...

Get your Green On
socapellen ()
What an amazing alternative to the unhealthy, un-conscientious places to eat in the "golden triangle" of DC!  It's a bit pricey, but considering that Java Green offers creative all-organic all-vegan cuisine, offsets its carbon use through windpower, and uses all bio-degradable lunchware, it's well worth the price.  Unfortunately, Java Green is a bit out of my way for weekday lunch, but I finally m... Free Music in DC

The summer is winding down, and for those of us who are staying in DC and starting to pay tuition bills again, free concerts become especially handy... ... More...

Best Pasta in DC
socapellen ()
ok, whenever I see or think the words "pasta mia," I sing them to the tune of "Casta Diva" Listen to Maria Callas sing it:  Paaaaaaaaaa-aa-aa-AA-aa-aastaa Miiiiiiii-ii-II-ii-aa  - so beautiful! If you've never been to Pasta Mia in Adam's Morgan, it's totally worth the trip, the wait, and the crowd.  It may not be the best pasta you'll ever eat, but I'm almost positive it will be the best pasta yo... More Free Movies!
socapellen ()
How did I not know about all these free movies until almost the end of the summer??!!  Shame, shame. Fortunately, there are still a few good free ones left to see.  This time, they're at the Mary Pickford Theater at the Library of Congress. Check out the schedule here:http://www.loc.gov/rr/mopic/pickford/pickford-current.htmlComing up tomorrow - 10 things I hate about you - eh...not so great but H... Gotta Love That Sri Lankan Baile Funk
Zach Marks (Yale University)
After being the subject of many a Campus Progress blog post, it’s only fitting that the release of M.I.A.’s second album, Kala, which drops today be announced here. I was gonna say something like “I’m bout to go run to the store and grab a copy now!” but that would be a lie. I been had that bootleg all summer.... More...

No End In Sight - See it!
socapellen ()
I guess the "social capital" blog is supposed to focus on fun social activities, but I've got one for you that's social, important, for-a-limited-time-only, and not the least bit fun.  You may not have heard about "No End in Sight," the latest and in my opinion best of the Iraq war documentaries, because it hasn't gotten much mainstream coverage yet and is only playing in one theater in the distri... Abby
A DC-import, Abby grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas, and has been trying to live it down ever since. She enjoys indiscriminately hating on things, lying to strangers, and talking endlessly about buying a bike and never actually buying a bike. She only eats food she can put at least four sauces on, and she's really amped for the release of Point Break 2.

Alexandria
Alexandria enjoys writing, listening to music and meeting new people. She also pays a high cell phone bill every month. She has big city flavor mixed with small-town hospitality. Nothing thrills her more than a great roller coaster, a good meal and an interesting book. She believes that her best is yet to come.

Andrea
Andrea is an avid champion of staring contests and a blue-ribbon thumb warrior. Saucier than a pop diva, but sweeter than a prima donna, her karaoke performances have received mixed reviews from DC audiences. Andrea enjoys long-lasting bubblegum, soy products, and green mangos. Though she prefers all that is colored red, her favorite Ninja Turtle is Michelangelo. Pointy shoes and plaid make her nervous. Polka dots make her smile.

Brad
Born in the desolate northern forests of Michigan to a pack of ravenous wolverines, Brad now splits his time between Providence, Rhode Island and his beloved District. When he's not saving the world (or filing papers) on the Hill, he can be found locked in basements throughout Montgomery County. His interests include Capitol Hill fashion, gospel choirs, coffee ice cream, and indie dance parties.

Claudia
Claudia is a self-confessed oddball who relaxes by listening to indie pop (think DCFC!) or down-tempo producers (think Thiev Corp!). When she is not criticizing the latest pop-culture phenomenon, Claudia likes to read the news from liberal-leaning outlets or watch over-the-top melodramatic television for the purpose of pointing out that it lacks any real value or creativity.

Ellen
Ellen is an obsessive compulsive recycler/packrat who spends most of her income on food. When not dining out or grocery shopping she can be found pretending to ride her bike, making frivolous purchases at thrift stores, or scouring idealist.org for yet another unpaid internship.

Jenny
Jenny grew up in metropolitan Detroit, also known as the professional sports capital of the universe. Since moving to DC, she has established herself as the de-facto organizer of Detroit Pistons fans living in the district. When she's not working at the National Council of Jewish Women, Jenny enjoys ice cream, reading, karaoke, Law and Order: SVU, politics, and extreme power-walking with the girls. Jenny's dreams include becoming friends with Tim Gunn, and, of course, becoming the first 5'2" female to play in the NBA.

John
John Pruett is a fellow at the watchdog organization Project On Government Oversight. He arrived in the District last Fall, hailing from the Lone Star state where he was trained in the arts of nightlife entertainment at the University of Texas at Austin. A self-styled hybrid of geek and chic, John specializes in fighting government corruption and discovering the latest parties and cheap events.

Ramya
Ramya enjoys bowling on her home turf of Cortlandt Lanes, quizzing people on eighties sitcom trivia that nobody else cares about, and competitive eating. She plans to spend the Fourth of July at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, hoping that Sonia "the Black Widow" Thomas steals the coveted Mustard Yellow Belt from five-time champ, Kobayashi.

Zach
Zach was first kicked out of an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant as a verdant seventh grader. “All-you-can-eat doesn’t last four hours,” the manager shouted as he shooed Zach out the door. That day foreshadowed much of what was to come for the young Philadelphian, who left high school before graduating to start a business teaching families to execute near-perfect Chinese fire drills. He can be found sneaking into rooftop pools in luxury hotels, flirting his way into kitchens of Ethiopian restaurants, and taking jokes “too far,” whatever that means.
