The Campus Progress National Conference drew a recording-breaking crowd with more than 1,300 attendees for a day of speeches and panels on the most pressing issues facing young people today. Speakers included President Bill Clinton, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, White House adviser Van Jones, CAP’s John Podesta, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden, and John Oliver from "The Daily Show."
The format of the conference included facilitated breakout sessions to give attendees the opportunity to engage with each other and the issues. Participants discussed in small groups how young people could make progress on each panel's topic. Halfway through the discussion, attendees switched places with someone at a different table, bringing different ideas together. Facilitators used a text messaging service to share the top ideas with all conference participants.
Attendees also used text messages and twitter to give feedback and ask the speakers questions. Feedback included praise for the gender-neutral bathrooms as well as a call for Erica Williams, deputy director of Campus Progress, to run for office. Many tweets drew laughs such as this one from zbrisson: "Spoken word poet + sign language = one harried ASL translator."
But don't just take our word for how inspiring and awesome it was. Read more about the conference from these other sites:
