Cynthia T. Ferguson

Cynthia T. Ferguson is a member of the United States Navy Nurse Corps and is both a Certified Nurse Midwife and Forensic Nurse Examiner for adults (FNE-A).

She has served at duty stations such as Camp LeJeune, NC; Yokosuka, Japan, and National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda Maryland. Prior to her service in the Navy Nurse Corps, Ferguson served for 7 years as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S.
Public Health/ Indian Health Service.

In her career, she has provided over ten years of sexual assault examination care and expert witness testimony, five years of coordinating and implementing training programs for Sexual Assault Examiners and Sexual Assault Response Teams, and has presented on sexual assault issues in the military at numerous conferences.

Cynthia Ferguson completed a Masters in Nursing/ Midwifery at
Case Western Reserve University in 1997, completed graduate education for a Masters in Criminal Justice at Troy University in 2006, and will graduate from George Washington University’s Masters of Public Health program in the summer of 2009.

Her MPH graduate work has focused primarily on medical violence prevention and response issues in the military, both within the national and globally. Cynthia Ferguson is additionally a PhD student of Public Health at Walden University, and is directing her research and dissertation on sexual assault prevention and response programs and policy in the military.

Ferguson was hand selected by the Department of Defense to serve on the Pentagon’s Joint Task Force for Sexual Assault Prevention and Response in 2004, and she assisted with writing the Department of Defense’s first policy on sexual assault.

She is a published author of several professional articles on sexual assault care and sexual assault military policy. She is an active member of the IAFN, and serves as a column editor for the Journal of Forensic Nursing. In addition, she recently organized and co-authored the first chapter on Forensic Nursing in the Military, in Virginia Lynch’s most recent textbook edition of Forensic Nursing.
