Tell Congress: Women Can't Afford to Lose
NARAL has a new video that shows how Rep. Stupak (D-MI) is leading the anti-choice charge against health-care reform. He’s willing to block health-care reform unless Congress agrees to impose an abortion ban on women in the new health-care system. Watch the video, then tell Congress: “Stand with women, not Rep. Stupak.” Click here to take action.
Tell your Rep. to Stop Sex Trafficking
With an estimated 100,000 children in the United States being traded as sex slaves, human trafficking has become one of the most horrific mass crimes of our time. That is why it is so incredibly vital that the House of Representatives follow through on a bill that can halt the mobility of child sex traders. The updated bill, International Megan’s Law of 2009, would require convicted sex traffickers to notify the government when they plan to travel internationally, as well as prevent foreign sex offenders from entering the U.S. Demand that your Representative sign this critical bill into law to protect our nation’s children. Keep the Climate Bill Moving Through Congress
On November 5, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act. This is inspiring and encouraging, but we know that we are not even a third of the way to a climate victory. If we want to ensure that the bill keeps enough momentum, we need to ensure that our leaders don’t bend to the wills of the coal lobbyists and other special interests who are devoted to squashing it. Active support for the bill from President Obama will help pressure Congress into doing what’s right. Take action and sign this petition for President Obama to step up support for climate legislation!
Call for an End to Mountain Blasting in WV
t this very moment, the Massey Energy company is dynamiting Coal River Mountain in West Virginia to make room for huge amounts of coal mining. Not only is mountaintop removal an atrocious assault on our land, but Massey is destroying plans that had already been in the works to turn the space on top of Coal River Mountain into a giant wind farm for clean energy. Finally, to add the icing on the cake, blasting through the mountain could endanger the lives of thousands of families who live in the river valley, unleashing rivers of toxic sludge with the power to demolish their towns and destroy their lives. This is unacceptable. Demand today that the Obama Administration stop dynamiting Coal River Mountain before it’s too late.
Pass ENDA This Fall
Today, employers in many states can still legally fire people because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. These hardworking Americans deserve the same protection as their coworkers. Tell Congress to Pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act this fall!
Take Action for Real Loan Forgiveness
A bipartisan bill in the U.S. House of Representatives, H.R. 2492, would prevent the taxation of debt forgiven through the new Income Based Repayment Program, which protects borrowers against high monthly student loan payments and provides loan forgiveness. Loan forgiveness is supposed to wipe the slate clean for responsible borrowers, not create a new financial obligation. Please take a moment to write to your representative and urge him or her to ensure there’s really a light at the end of the tunnel for responsible borrowers. Click here to take action.
Send a Letter to the Editor to Make College Affordable
Congress is currently considering a plan to invest $87 billion to boost Pell grants, lower interest rates on some student loans, and invest in community colleges and minority serving institutions. This would represent the largest federal investment in higher education ever, but the fight to reform the health care system has meant that the student aid bill hasn’t been able to get the headlines and air time that it deserves. Young people must be heard on this issue, and writing a letter to the editor is a quick and effective way to add to the debate. Newspapers publish some of the letters that they receive, and, even when letters are not published, editors do make sure to cover the issues that they know their readers care about. Tell Congress: Put Students Over Banks
Congress is considering a bill that would cut wasteful government subsidies for student loan companies, and use the $87 billion in savings to make college more affordable and accessible. It would represent the biggest investment in higher education ever, and include $40 billion for the Pell Grant. Unfortunately, student loan companies want to protect their subsidies, and have launched a multi-million dollar lobbying and PR campaign to stop real reform. They have even hired Qorvis Communications, a high powered and controversial PR firm. Don’t let big lenders and big lobbyists torpedo a bill to give more grants to students, take action now.
