I actually had a different title in mind, but seeing the last two posts about how summer is almost over made me change my mind. Teaism, a tea house and restaurant, apparently has three locations in DC. I've only been to the one in Dupont. Read More »
Unfortunately, there are only a few more weeks before Social Capital goes on its year-long hiatus until next summer. Luckily for all those young progressives who still need a heads up as to where to get some culture and entertainment, DC is a "fusicology city."
On Friday night, I went to Evolve, a hip and sophisticated Adam's Morgan bar, for the first time. If you ever find yourself in Adam's Morgan, but realize that you're sick of Adam's Morgan, I suggest checking out Evolve.
I have only had good experiences at Madhatter on 1831 M street in Dupont, but I have to admit, I was a bit disapointed with the decor the first time I went. I imagined that there would be oversized teapots, brightly colored plastic chairs, and Jefferson Airplane songs playing on repeat in a bar named after Alice in Wonderland.
For those of you seeking a cheap, late-night thrill, I suggest getting your glamour shot taken with friends in the CVS parking lot on Florida Ave, near U Street. Read More »
I envy those of you who are still in college and are going back to live in the dorms. Sure, dorm life has its inconveninces and indignities. Especially when you get sexiled by your "liberated" roommate or when you're the one trying to "watch a movie" with your "friend" in that extra-long single bed.
But there is something comforting about having the option of living in a dorm that I miss now that I am on the higher educational outside.
This afternoon my favorite used bookstore will be hosting an event. The Capitol Hillbillies will be rolling the piano down to perform outside Riverby Books. Beginning at 3:00 this afternoon, the Hillbillies welcome all to an afternoon of music.
Dear Social Capital readers, I must admit that I have been holding out on you. There is a place in DC that makes the most ridiculous cocktails, and I have been debating whether or not to share this information with you. Read More »
I hate to admit it, but I have a soft spot for Recessions Resturant and Bar. They have some of the best happy hour specials, assuming you like fried food and cheap drinks. It is one of the few places in DC where you can still get a lot of bang for your buck. Read More »
Ebenezers Coffeehouse is one of my favorite local places to get a cup of joe. Yesterday I learned that in addition to making delicious iced espresso drinks, they also have concerts and events including dance lessons and open mic nights. Read More »
Last night I went to BloomBars in Columbia Heights for the first time. Don't let the name fool you, BloomBars is not an establishment that serves libations. If you're thirsty or just like to get loose before you listen to music, you can go next door to Wonderland.
Usually, I am WMATA's biggest fan. Having lived in New York and travelled in Mexico City, I have pretty high standards for Metro systems. Although its small and subject to delays, the DC Metro never fails to get me where i need to go. But recently, my love affair with the DC metro has been suffering. Read More »
With a motto like "Why be less, when you can B-more?", a nickname like charm city, and a reputation for high rates of both crime and STD infections, Baltimore, Maryland is a place that you have to see for yourself. Read More »
I have been to the Portrait Gallery several times and still love it. Located in Chinatown - Gallery Place, the small museam has only three floors of temporary and permanent exhibitions.
When I moved from Berkeley, CA to DC in February, I anticipated that I would miss the Bay Area's amazing Mexican food most of all. Sure, I was leaving behind some great friends on the west coast, along with bike lanes, and a political climate that makes the rainy city a progressive paradise, but food is first. Luckily, DC also has some tasty Latin food options in addition to Chipotle.
During happy hour last Thursday at John Hobbins, my friend promised me we'd do something spectacular to celebrate the beginning of the long weekend. We were already in Dupont, also known as the Gayborhood, so we decided to take the party away from the boring after work crowd and onto the dance floor. Read More »
Some Saturdays I wake up with a craving that my regular bowl of Trader O's or toast and peanut butter will not satisfy. Even a trip to a my neighborhood bagel shop, leaves me missing my days in NYC. Sometimes I just gotta have something greasy for breakfast.
My new favorite venue in the U street area is on 2007 14th street NW. Marvin has dark wood floors, comfortable lounge-like chairs, a DJ booth above a dance floor, and an outside roof deck with its second bar. Inside the walls are covered in pictures of jazz greats. Most importantly, the DJ played some smokin' hot 70s funk that kept me and my dancing shoes very happy.
