I just came back from my alternative spring break trip to help rebuild New Orleans. The trip was planned through New Jersey Pirg and Water Watch, organizations on my campus that do a lot throughout the state to raise awareness about certain issues and reach out to the community, especially in Newark, New Jersey.

In total there were about 100 students in the Church we stayed in with approximately 30 from Montclair and the rest from different Rutgers campuses. The work was often hard and tiring but overall, it was one of the best things I've ever done in my life and I can honestly say that sentiment was shared with every one else I went with.   Read More »

One of my close male friends from New York City  had the unfortunate (in my opinion) experience of attending college upstate. Being (close to) the only black person in his school, he has had many interesting encounters.

 The latest involves a girl he's been pursuing for a couple of years  who flirts with him on and off but seems to only actually date guys who try to act a certain way. Being a little slow in the romance department, my friend decided to ask her straight out today, why she was so hesitant.

Her response: "You should talk black to me. You talk like a white person; it sounds wierd. You sound too proper."
