A Return to Earth

CPAC officially ended and I have returned to Earth unscathed from this horrifying conference. While it took a lot for me to sit through it all and keep quiet I'm glad I went.

I learned a lot about these people. They are angry, vengeful people who really want to control everything. They see themselves as the victims and everyone else in the world must agree with everything they ask for or they somehow become evil. All their calls for balance and fairness and "intellectual diversity" are hollow. What they really want is control and with that control they want to create a world where everything from the media to professors are skewed to their liking.

Yesterday there was a student panel on "Battling the Left in Its Privileged Sanctuaries". It featured students from Ball State, Bucknell and Roger Williams. These students were able to make conservative gains on campus through threats, lies, and distortions.

One student, Jason Mattera, told the audience that he was elected finance chair of his student government and gave his own group the most money on campus. What is fair or equitable about that?

But as I listened to these students I wasn't amazed or wowed by what they did or their presence. None were great speakers, their arguments all had flaws, and they only got what they wanted by being deceitful.

So it should follow that they should be easy to stop. And that is our job. On all of our campuses we need to stop these people in their tracks, to not cede an inch, and to continue to promote a progressive message that has made America what it is today.

Conservative Cannibalism

As the third day of CPAC winds down, one thing that is particularly notable is the level of attacks on fellow conservatives. Conservatives like John McCain, Chuck Hagel, Olympia Snowe, Christine Todd Whitman, and basically everyone who is not a Rick Santorum cutout is bashed here as a liberal traitor that can’t be trusted.

So while preaching inclusiveness it seems these people practice some sort of conservative cannibalism. They believe anyone with any connection to anything liberal, whether real or perceived, must be destroyed. Well, I’m glad I’m outta here soon!

Things Overheard at CPAC

Another student and I have been hard at work listening to what people are saying at CPAC. Here are some of our favorites...

"People in Canada are so supportive of gay rights because there's no hockey right now and guys are just sitting around and talking about their feelings."

"All women should join the NRA."

"When we get to Sen. Specter's office, there won't be any hippy stuff."

"If there is a tiny bit of obstruction I am going to camp out in his [Specter's] office."

"This is a monument to wasted spending." -Talking about the Calder piece in the Hart Senate Office Building. What they don't know is that the art was put there by a Republican.

"Public schools are huge indoctrination zones."

"Just don't touch each other’s stuff. If that isn't conservatism I don't know what it."

"I got two articles rejected from my school paper because they called them hate speech. I framed that rejection letter I was so proud."

Ann Coulter Speaks

These are the best tidbits from Ann Coulter's speech at CPAC...

“Liberals like to scream and howl about McCarthyism, I say let’s give them some. They’ve have intellectual terror on campus for years....it’s time for a new McCarthyism.”

“Since they’re always acting like they’re oppressed…I say let’s do it, let’s oppress them.” -Talking about Liberals

“In addition to racist and Nazi, how about adding traitor to the list of things that professors can’t be? And yes, I realize I just proposed firing the entire Harvard faculty.”

“That’s your mission. These institutions can be shaken” -Talking about college campuses

“They don’t have any ideas, we have all the ideas. We are sweeping the youth of America and they are going the way of the Whigs” -Talking about Conservative over Liberals.

Who Needs Smart Kids and the Arts Anyway?

CPAC and just keeps getting better and better. The fun doesn't stop. Today’s agenda includes a bit of slamming on the “liberal” supreme court, more attacks on CBS, NBC, and ABC, boosting Ronald Reagan’s legacy, more McCain, Whitman, Chaffee bashing, and the continuation of the “we are the victim but we have achieved such greatness" theme.

Pat Buchanan spoke this morning, and I have already treated you to my favorite quote from his speech, but it is worth noting that Buchanan is actually against the No Child Left Behind Act, but not because it is a rotten law but because he wants the Department of Education abolished. He also wants the National Endowment for the Arts abolished and the building fumigated. These two proposals were met by great applause.

Artists = cockroaches. Nice.

Daily Reflections

We named this blog Vistor from Earth and I didn't realize how fitting it was until the end of the program this evening.

Listening to Dick Cheney and others speak tonight, it becomes very clear that they are speaking about an entirely different world than I live in.

They live in a world that is pink and rosey, where America has never been stronger at home and abroad, where the economy is pumping out more jobs then we know what to do with, where we are loved and adored internationally, where the president is hugely popular, where progressives try to take away your rights, and where there are only sunny days ahead.

The world Cheney and his friends talked about tonight was a world where the people that control three branches of government are the vicitims, where the only media to trust is biased, and where we are constantly finding biological and chemical weapons in Iraq. I kid you not, Rep. Chris Cox, CHAIR of the Homeland Security Committee told the audience, "We continue to find biological and chemical weapons [in Iraq]." Well if Rep. Cox knows where they are then I wish he'd share it with the rest of us!

They live in a world where you get an award for asking someone to resign. Sen. Norm Coleman recieved the Defender of the Constitution Award for being the first Senator to ask for Kofi Annan's resignation. To conservatives, any jab at the UN deserves an award. If all you have to do to get an award is denounce someone you dislike and try to get them fired I deserve about 50 awards.

I don't think this sounds like the real world at all, does it? It certainly sounds like THEY are a little out of touch.

I Promote Freedom, You Are Evil

First day wrap up: Conservatives seem to have a trend going. Everything they like promotes freedom, everything they dislike is evil. During the 2004 election, conservatives used this strategy with the war on terror, since it worked so well for them then they have apparently broadened their scope.

Today I heard: conservatives promote freedom, the federal marriage amendment promotes freedom, tax cuts promote freedom, “new media” promotes freedom, immigration reform promotes freedom, “intellectual diversity” on campuses promotes freedom, and so on down the line.

On the flip side liberals are evil, unions are evil, same sex marriage is evil, internationalism is evil, campaign finance is evil, and one lady even said John McCain is evil. Apparently, having one’s own mind is evil.

I prefer Crest over Colgate, does that mean Crest promotes freedom and Colgate is evil?

Poor Spelling and Evil Doers

Top Ten Things I Learned at the First Day of CPAC
10. The McCain Feingold Act is bad and needs to be abolished.
9. In fact John McCain is bad and should not be trusted.
8. Labor Unions are bad and Must be Destroyed.
7. CBS, ABC, and NBC are evil.
6. Liberals tried to steal the 2004 election and must be stopped.
5. Conservatives are victims even though they control the government.
4. The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and U.S. News and World Report don’t mind their journalists taking biased stands at conservative rallies.
3. Conservatives love book signings. Late night ones. 9am ones. It just doesn’t matter.
2.5 When in conservative circles, Reagan is spelled Regan.
2. Rwanda is really spelled Rowanda, at least on the CPAC agenda. Really guys, this is getting ridiculous.
1. The fee to get in was really just optional and should not be paid next time. Good to know.

Brown Shoes, White Socks, Black Pants. Tragic.

Top Ten Conservative Fashion Tips from CPAC:
10. Cowboy hats. It’s all about the cowboy hat.
9. Brown shoes do go with black pants, I swear!
8. White socks also go with black pants.
7. Your pants don’t really need to reach your shoes.
6. Your tie doesn’t really need to match your shirt.
5. A flag tie is a must. (Enter the CPAC raffle to win one!)
4. You can never wear enough cologne.
3. Proper women should never be seen without one article of fur.
2. Bowties are so in.
1. Don’t forget your Condi 08 button!

First Dispatch

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is a nasty place for the weak of heart. Everywhere you look there are booths selling tee-shirts comparing blue states to communist China or dozens of books blaming progressives for anything and everything imaginable, a strong stomach is key to survival.

The most startling thing about CPAC is the amount of young people in attendance. At 21, I thought I would be the young babe of the bunch. But instead, from eighth graders to college students, young folk have flooded in from all over the country 3 glorious days of conservative brainwashing. They can learn how to create a conservative publication on their campus, how to debate liberals, how to deal with the media, how to bring conservatives together on campus, and much more. They have special lunches for young people, internship programs, scholarships, and grants. All this is designed to cultivate the next Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity.

They may not be the coolest kids, the best dressed kids, or even the most intelligent kids, but the youngsters are here in full force and everything at CPAC is geared to us. CPAC gives away trendy shirts with sayings like “Capitalist Pig”, freebie balls, stickers, toys, and food. Even the program language is geared toward young people; “2004: How the Bad Guys Tried to Stop Us and How We Can Guard Against Future Cheating”, “The UN: What They’re Up To and Why We Should Care”, “Cutting Spending is Tough Work, But Somebody Has to Do It”. These are all simple, catchy and easy to grab on to.

All this serves as a reminder as to how important Campus Progress really is. Conservatives are trying to build an army of drones for the future and it is our job to dismantle them.
