On 60 minutes this Sunday, apart from the interview with President Bush, the parents of the Duke Lacrosse players who were charged with raping a black exotic dancer were featured, in light of the recent resignation of Prosecutor and Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong from the case, and the subsequent allegations of Nifong's manipulation of the race issue for his personal political gain.
The last question posed to the parents of the three players was: "If Mr. Nifong walked in the room, right now, what would you like to say to him?"
Rae Evans, (mother of David Evans), replied "I guess I'd say, with a smile on my face, 'Mister Nifong, you've picked on the wrong families. You've picked on the wrong families that you've indicted; you've picked on the wrong family of the Duke lacrosse team. You've picked on the wrong family of Duke University, and you will pay every day for the rest of your life.'"
Granted, Ms Evans has the right to be upset; her sons were wrongfully accused and taken to court prematurely, probably because Nifong wanted to look strong in the face of a Black opponent in the District Attorney elections. No one deserves to be wrongfully accused of a crime, and the dimension of race politics certainly makes it frustrating. But how many of the wrongfully-accused get to air their injustices on 60 minutes? How many whose reputations have been destroyed by false accusations and indictments get national publicity to help clear their names? Black youth are victims of race politics everyday, but national television is not there to clean up their reputations.
For once, a black person gets the benefit of the doubt in the United States judicial system.
This is probably the only time in any of these lacrosse players' lives in which they will be victims of racial prejudice. And instead of lending their voices to the thousands of victims racial injustice everywhere, the parents of these players use their last words on 60 minutes to vow their revenge.
