On October 17, 2008, the Gamma Pi Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha hosted the third annual "Art of Surviving" benefit banquet. The event paid tribute to survivors of domestic violence, the chapter's philanthropic initiative. "Lambda Theta Alpha is about empowering those who struggle to strive. The 'Art of Surviving' banquet is about honoring those who have been brave enough to demand something more for themselves- they are survivors of domestic violence," said Stephanie Fyock, the event's organizer. The banquet showcased performances by local singers, a self-defense presentation, and renowned spoken word artist Dasan Ahanu.
Funds raised from the event totaled over $1,800 and directly benefited Safespace Foundation Inc., a non profit organization committed advocating for and empowering domestic violence victims and survivors through their collaborating with agencies and organizations that provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, and financial assistance to those individuals.
The event also included presentations from survivors of domestic violence currently residing at Safespace. The presentations detailed their experiences and journeys to safety, and they expressed gratitude to the audience for helping fund this worthwhile cause. "I believe that the 'Art of Surviving' is Gamma Pi's effort to reach out to the community, to empower people as well, so that all can advocate against oppression like domestic violence in their everyday lives," said Ms. Fyock.
