This morning, the New York Times story reporting the loss of 80,000 jobs is flanked by ads for Tiffany & Co.'s "celebration rings." According to Tiffany, "There are times to celebrate...Maybe just because."

Right. Americans lost far more jobs in March than economists had predicted, and I'm going to commemorate the event with a $7,500 diamond ring.

Just as an aside

My girlfriend works for a prominent family-owned jeweler, and she's told me stories of how much Tiffany & Co. overprices their jewelry - something along the lines of 4 times their cost, plus 40% (and that doesn't include labor costs, either). People go into my girlfriend's store to get their jewelry appraised, and their jaws drop at how comparatively little their jewelry is actually worth.

But yeah, that's a pretty telling juxtaposition - maybe someone in the ad department has a wry sense of humor.

Then again, the people Tiffany & Co. wants to attract are more likely to be the people on the *other* end of the pink slip...
