McCain's Worst Week Ever
Bad? Brilliant?

You have to feel bad for the guy. McCain has had a really bad week. Tuesday, right before he had go to the Senate floor to defend President Bush's Iraq policy, four of his top policy advisors handed in their resignations. Then his campaign was handed a sex scandal.

Yesterday the co-chair of his Florida campaign was arrested on charges solicitation for prostitution after he offered an undercover police officer money for a sex act. Florida State Rep. Bob Allen said that it was “a very big misunderstanding” after he was given the charges after handing an undercover officer $20.00 for the act.

Compounded by his shortage of campaign funds, this week must be taking a toll on the man I thought would be a shoo-in for the GOP nomination. Contender no more?  What do you think his role will be as the campaign continues?

soliciting prostitutes?! i'm shocked and appalled. Republicans never do things like that.

I think this is actually backwards...the news account I read said that the state Rep. was actually offering the services to the officer, not the other way around. In other words, he was prostituting himself--similarly shocking and appaling, I'm sure.

And while I know I'm going to Hell for this, I have to point it out:

Under the "Recreational Interest" heading on his official Florida House website, he put "water sports."

Yeah, I'm going to Hell.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but the CNN report says he "gave the officer $20.00 for the act." Not sure if he wanted to give or receive, but it's bad either way.

Yeah, CNN got it wrong. Orlando Sentinel confirmed Allen offered to do the deed for $20. Link

South Florida Sun-Sentinel says the same. Link

On the heels of the Gupta hit job on Michael Moore, it's sad that CNN blew another story. Alas.

And it looks like it's even worse than I thought. It wasn't that Allen offered to blow the cop for $20, but that he offered the cop $20 to get blown. Yeah, Allen was willing to pay $20 for the honor of fellating a random stranger in a public restroom.

I just don't see that getting topped by anyone affiliated with any other campaign this cycle.

Incidentally, Allen swears he's innocent and that he's going to fight the charges. Good luck to him, I suppose.

Wonder how he's going to prove that one. "I was offering the officer 20.00 to........., not for a sexual act."

Thanks for getting it right--because now McCain has to be even more embarassed than I thought.

Something oddly funny about it all: Justin Rood, formerly of TPM and now at ABC, got it wrong, too, and his old outfit was the one that issued the clarifying post. Does simply joining the MSM somehow impair factual reporting? I jokingly wonder...
