As most college kids I've fallen in love with smoking Hookah either at home or at a hookah lounge. I've often struggled with why I love smoking hookah so much and often day dream of getting a new bowl ready, lighting up the charcoal, and inhaling some wonderful tasting smoke. As the room fills with the wonderful aroma, everyone settles in and prepares for a nice session of random chatter and hookah.
Now a vast majority of my friends and other hookah patrons don't smoke cigarettes in fact they seem to look down upon those "other" smokers. And often the patrons of these hookah lounges tell the people that hookah smoke is not bad and has no negative health effects and to buy another bowl.
But MayoClinic quotes a recent WHO report that contributes a session of smoking hookah to be almost equivalent to smoking 100 to 200 times more then a single cigarette (volume of smoke). Which should be all but obvious. But the thing that is important is that:
“Even after passing through the water, the tobacco smoke produced still contains high levels of toxic compounds, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). Hookah smoking also delivers significant levels of nicotine — the very addictive substance in tobacco.” – WHO
So where is the uproar of anti smoking ads against this? Where are the legions?!
Regardless of the warning I’m looking forward to my mixed bowl of jasmine and vanilla this evening.
