He's a randy Young Republican

You're a young Republican in Indiana (just go with me here). You're looking for a nice way to end the month of July, so you attend a Young Republicans party, where you enjoy good food and drink while probably insulting the waiting staff and getting completely wasted. The leader of the Young Republicans National Federation, Glenn Murphy, is also there, and is also completely wasted. Kind soul that you are, you decide to offer him your house, because, unlike poor people, he deserves a safety net for his mistakes. You expect you'll be thanked in the morning, and this rising GOP star will remember your name for the future. Right?

Well, you certainly don't expect to wake up in the middle of the night and finding yourself sexually assaulted. But that's exactly what happened two weeks ago in Indiana, in the latest incident of the best-selling series "GOP Stars - Tales of Forbidden Love." At Columbia, we're quite familiar with this: not only did we share every other progressive's slight glee at the outing of Ted Haggard and Mark Foley, but we also got our own dose of male prostitute. It says something when this sort of scandal doesn't even surprise people anymore. A few more details on the Indiana case in extended.

The news comes to this blog via the good people at Advance Indiana, from which it was picked up by DailyKos. A couple of points of interest: First, the Young Republicans quickly removed Murphy from their leadership index, which appears to be lacking, well, almost any racial diversity at all. Solid performance there. Second, and much funnier, is that Murphy is not contesting that the...er...act did occur, but is rather claiming that the act was consensual. Now, instead of denials, the question for the jury is: are there one or two closeted Young Republicans? You can't make this stuff up; only the sweetness of blatant hypocrisy makes it possible.

This is a worthwhile story...

...But I could do without the excessive buildup -- as if there aren't plenty of horny young people at political conventions of all stripes. The story here is sexual assault, not sex.

The guy sounds like a total creep - good to see him get kicked out of the political gene pool, and if it's as bad as it sounds I wouldn't be shocked to hear criminal charges come out of this.

but it's definitely not the raunchiest Republican homosexual scandal out there. I think the Bob Allen scandal sort of flew under the CampusProgress blog's radar, which is a shame because it's a great story.

Bob Allen, a Florida state rep, was hanging out in a public park restroom apparently waiting for some action. When a fellow bathroom user entered a stall to dry his hands because the towel dispenser was empty, Allen peered over the stall door then joined the man inside. Allen muttered "Hi," and then said, "This is kind of a public place, isn't it?" The man asked Allen about going somewhere else and the legislator suggested going "across the bridge, it's quieter over there."

"Well look, man, I'm trying to make some money; you think you can hook me up with 20 bucks?" the man asked Allen.

"Sure, I can do that, but this place is too public," Allen responded.

So the two left, Allen looking forward to performing oral sex on this man for only $20. Turned out the guy was a cop.

Allen's attempt at an excuse: fear made me do it. "This was a pretty stocky black guy, and there was nothing but other black guys around in the park," Allen said. He said he feared he "was about to be a statistic."
