Congressional Flatulence

Congressmen are like farts. Everyone dislikes them except his own.

Like many others, I've been mulling over the possible outcome of the quickly approaching midterm elections. Although change seems to be afoot, I have the sinking feeling that people are just too complacent with their standard representation to demand anything else - even when the political climate reeks. After all, congress only has a 25% approval rating but a hearty 53% of people approve of their own representative. In other words, people despise congress, but not their congressman.

And I think that speaks to the general myopia of the American electorate. They decry, "Throw the bums out!! But wait… Leave our bum there. He keeps bringing home the pork." Either that or he probably smells nice.

Well poofed-- oops, put! Where is the national air freshner when the country needs it most? Let´s hope American voters use their ballots like they use their Glade and "freshen up" Congress!

Useless numbers

Those numbers are less useful at telling us anything than the "Would you rather vote for a Republican or a Democrat this election" poll. Unless we're talking 53% of people in contested districts with incumbents running for another term, then we've tainted the useful part of the survey with some useless information. Putting it another way, nobody in the Georgia 5th is going to register dissatisfaction with John Lewis, and he's never going to face a serious challenge for the rest of his career. The same can be said of most incumbents in most districts. Those districts don't really matter in determining the control of Congress this cycle--it's the contested seats that will make the difference.
