"Evan Almighty"--Good, Clean Christian Comedy
Bad? Brilliant?

When perusing through the 700 Club’s website this morning (I like a bit of comedy to start my day), I noticed a “Special Features” link to the upcoming Steve Carell film, “Evan Almighty,” about a modern-day Noah. Right there on Pat Robertson’s website, you can not only learn about the movie, you can also “test your Ark knowledge” or build your own metaphorical ark!  How strange to see the former “Daily Show” golden boy and star of the delightfully crude “The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” suddenly doing it for the Lord.

It may be hard to imagine that the comedy of a frat packer like Steve Carell could appeal to a Jesus-centric crowd but it turns out that the 700 Club is not the only evangelical organization to find “Evan Almighty” worthy of it’s good graces. Other fundamentalist Christian groups are also plugging the film on their websites—take a look at Battle Cry’s endorsement.

In the hopes of ensuring that their $175 million dollar movie makes a profit, Universal has formed a partnership with a marketing firm, Grace Hill Media which specializes in reaching Christian audiences. Notably, “Evan Almighty” is rated PG, unlike its slightly naughtier predecessor, “Bruce Almighty,” which received a PG-13. The producers have also ensured that the film’s premiere will also feature performances from Christian rock bands.

After the success of films like “Passion of the Christ,” and “Chronicles of Narnia,” who can blame them?

...but I have to think that The 700 Club endorsement has a lot to do with covering Robertson's ass over what happened on the last one: Link

Hey, FRC used to hate "The Simpsons," and now pimp it as one of the most pro-faith shows on TV.

Personally...

I think the film 'Evan Almighty' is completely anti-biblical, and, as a concerned Christian, I would personally not endorse it. It's not the movie that bothers me the most, but the way that Christian groups endorse it and the way that secular groups call it a 'Christian comedy'. Making the most catastrophic, deadly event in human history, killing off all humanity with the exception of Noah and his sons and their wives... a comedy? I don't think it's funny. Also, as God promised he would never flood the world again, this movie with another occurance of a global flood calls God a liar. Most reading this will say these views are too harsh, and that 'it's just a movie'. But the Christian endorsement of the movie, despite the blatant anti-Biblical nature, is what bothers me.

Christians like you are exactly who drove me from the faith-frothing at the mouth and crazy. Spoiler- first, God does not break his promise and flood the world. Second, the story of Noah is not turned into a comedy- maybe you should see the movie or do some research before you rant. God is presented in a positive light as one who cares about you and wants to help you. Who cares if Christians want to endorse it? let them have something they can get behind. I dont care what someone says about any movie- so long as they have seen it.
