Mingling with the Other Side

Ramya's Friday blog post on conservative hotspot, Smith Point, caused a lot of excitement here at Campus Progress. Obviously, the possibilities seemed endless. Send one of our progressive interns to infiltrate the elite hangout of the likes of Barb and Jenna Bush. Let the hilarity ensue. Imagine my surprise then on Friday night when I accidentally (I must stress this word) and unknowingly wandered in to the side entrance of Smith Point. And I wasn't even wearing pearls!

And what was inside this fortress of young, hot, DC conservatism? Well, imagine if J.Crew suddenly exploded into a very dark space. That's Smith Point. Everything from the nautical theme (pictures of boats) to the sandy-haired white boys in pink polos and loafers screamed East Coast, "I've got a big yacht" preppy-chic.

Extremely excited and a little intoxicated, I spent most of my time at the Point in reporter mode, asking people about their political affiliation. Almost everyone replied "Republican, of course" except for one girl in the bathroom who claimed to be a liberal. One khaki-clad guy smugly told my friend that had she been at Smith Point on a Saturday, she probably would have gotten to hang out with a Redskins player or a Bush twin. In the words of US Weekly readers everywhere, O-M-G!

What surprises me most about the night is that I had a great time. I mean, aside from the blinding amount of whiteness and the ridiculous decor, I thoroughly enjoyed spending an hour or so dancing to cheesy top 40 hip-hop ("Glamorous" by Fergie was notably well-received) and mingling with the "other side."

And who says we can't all get along?

haha well, I'm sure this was a special time for you. Did you go alone? if so- I'm sorry. I think the amount of J-Crew, pearls and plaid attire might have been enough to make me scream obscenities like "BUCK FUSH". See, when I go anywhere remotely political (and intoxicated).. I am no longer a nice little liberal.. I turn into a person who no longer cares about having fun and just wants to talk about genocide in Darfur, how effed up our health care system is.. or umm, HARRY POTTER! Also known as.. a total buzz kill.

Good for you Kate. You are so open-minded ;)

My friend Sally is Hispanic and she had the most fun...she even exchanged business cards with a girl in a plaid tube dress. Shocking!

Also, in response to your question about my attire. Bright coral lycra dress from Urban Outfitters--very Miami in the 80s. Pictures available upon request.

Sounds ravishing Darling...

Any bow-ties? Please tell me someone came in a bow-tie. I will love life.

The accidental infiltration is what makes this story so amazing. But you didn't answer an important question: would you ever go back? (and if so can we bring your friend so we can all experience it :)

haha

as the apparent consensus pick for "cp person most likely to infiltrate with ease" (i'll admit that i fit the part - all-boys high school with required blazers and ties plus my undying love for all clothes j-crew) i congratulate kate on wandering in the side door. first off, though, obviously it can't be too exclusive if kate can get in the side door. second, i have to mention that i am completely unsurprised bad hip-hop was playing; in high school for me, popped collars and pink polos were joined by a third telltale characteristic - horribly white people blaring horribly bad rap from their suburbans' subwoofers. to use a phrase the lns crowd might understand, it's really nouveau riche.

I am so offended that you don't think I'm one of those beautiful people that always gets in through side entrances. I hope Cara takes you down in the food-a-thon.

i meant that i assume an exclusive place would have somebody at the side door too. also, who said they were beautiful? lns seems to indicate otherwise.

That's pretty cool, but I've noticed that..

campus progress/center for american progress folks happen to be quite upscale and hip also, which alienates most of the modern Democratic/Green base and makes us look elitist.

The next time you guys go out, you should tell everyone, so we can infiltrate the Republican bar. Now that would be funny. We should wear the LNS "outfit" too. Rep collared shirt, boat shoes, and blue blazer. :)
