We headed over to Cobalt, a gay dance club and bar, on 16th and R steet.
They have no cover, a live DJ, and one particularly strange rule: No High Heels. I have been there twice and am still not sure why this is. But ladies (and gents): don't say I didn't warn you if they refuse you and your stillettos entry but let in people wearing sneakers and flip-flops. For the most part, the patrons are trendy in that European kind of way.
Unfortunately, we got there around 10:00 which was too early. Although our posse of six people tried to get the party started, the music didn't really inspire us to bust out or best moves. We went downstairs to lounge around on the couches, and before we knew it, the place was packed. Somewhere between 11:30-12:00the party got started, but by then we were too tuckered out to partake.
I definitely recommend checking out Cobalt (in a pair of sensible, flat shoes) but make sure you arrive late if you're looking to dance. Otherwise, the have happy hour specials in the early evening that may make you want to stay all night.

The best explanation I can think of: It's a gay club, and it's not about you and your female friends getting dolled up and going out together, it's about the men, for the men. It probably also keeps out the tipsy girls in clicky heels who're out for a night on the town and decide on a whim they'd like to check out a gay club for shits and giggles, since that's not really conducive to the man-on-man action the club is there for.
In other words, guests are allowed in their house, but don't rearrange the furniture and don't overstay your welcome.
There is no cover on Thursdays and Fridays, but you gotta pay on Saturdays. Not sure why, especially now that Town is taking away everyone else's business.
Cobalt also has a good 70's and 80's music night on Tuesdays. Check it out.
But, for the record, both times I went to Cobalt I was brought by gay men. So, even if the bar doesn't cater to so-called fag hags, that doesn't mean that the Cobalt clientele necessarily wants women to be excluded as much as the management does.
