Split Loyalties

Someone in Texas squealed on Tom DeLay. One of my fathers lessons has long been that conspiracies fail because people have different motivations and loyalties. Virtually always, those loyalties will come into conflict.

Well, it looks like someone's loyalties came into conflict with Rep. DeLay's. And one of Kevin Drum's leaders has a guess as to whom that might have been: one of those corporate "persons" caught in the middle of the scandal.

Look at it this way, if the DeLay/Abramoff/Norquist machine is really a giant protection racket, the businesses aren't entirely pleased to be in the middle of it. Now that there's a sign of weakness in the machine, one of the businesses, looking out for its bottom line, squeals on DeLay in order to break the machine.

It's a good business move. And, for us, it's great politics.

It sure is great to see big business look out for their shareholders and consumers.

Of course, we can't be sure this is what happened yet, but we'll likely find out in the coming months.

As Poor Richard Says...

...three men can keep a secret if two of them are dead.

The lobbyists are dead in the water.

DeLay (the legislative powerhouse) is dead in the water.

Who's left standing? Kevin Drum Link has an interesting thought: what if it's the corporate entities involved that are rolling over?

Makes you wonder....

Lessons learned?

It's amazing how they have been talking about DeLay's miscreant ways since '02, and now that he is being indicted he has the balls to flat out deny any wrongdoing and the right just gobbles it up. The "Texans for a Republican Majority" was his creation that has carried Christianity like a banner to war, pumping the Republican warchest with Church alms. WIth any luck, the Religious Right will be able to see through the smoke and mirrors to realize they've been duped by a false promise of a return to Christian fundamentalism in Washington. They were seduced with images of good, Christian Republican gay-bashing and anti-abortion and pro-Chaivo only to find corruption and lies. The tragedy will be when this doesn't lead to any new reforms in campaign finance nor lobbying regulation.
