Both Google and Yahoo! have cooperated with the communist government in the People's Republic to crack down on pro-democracy adovocates, which has rightfully sparked staunch opposition from NGOs such as Amnesty International. I have Yahoo! Mail, which may (or may not) be purchased by Microsoft, our friendly neighborhood monopolist. The two events described above have prompted me to look elsewhere for an email provider; however, my other options are human rights abuser Google (operator of Gmail) or corporate media conglomerate AOL Time Warner.

Herein lies my dilemma (and hopefully now the dilemma of those reading this with Gmail, Yahoo!, or AOL accounts). Do we become Luddites and embark on the path of removing email from our lives? Or are there other alternatives that we can pursue without compromising our moral standards?
