Jesse's post yesterday about introverts reminded me of one of my favorite articles ever written. It's an explanation of introversion written by an introvert, Jonathan Rauch.

As an extreme introvert myself, I find the piece to be rather handy. I always email it to friends and family when they ask me why I like to spend so much damn time alone.

...that article makes me just a tad unfair, as an incredibly extroverted person in a long-term relationship with an introvert. It seems to put introversion as a default, and imagine that extroverts should build their lives around catering to the introvert, rather than a more equal adaptation on both sides. Nobody writes a 'caring for your extrovert' article about how introverts can adapt.

I don't think it's meant to be taken that seriously. And his point is that normally most forms of advice or general thoughts on the matter praise extraversion while introversion is seen as something to kind of change.

Like when he advises not to ask someone wha'ts wrong I thought was really on point because there's many times when either alone or with people who were discussing something I found a little boring that I'd sort of get lost in my own thoughts and people would always ask me that when I was perfectly fine. So I think he's just trying to clear the air that it could an introvert could be really misunderstood and instead of trying to change it just deal with it.

He wrote it because culture usually does put extraversion as the default and he says extraverts make up 3/4's of the population.
