Some of you may remember the Oklahoma state representative we blogged about last week. Her name is Sally Kern, and she was caught on tape arguing that gays and lesbians in the United States are more dangerous than terrorists, that they are infiltrating the government, and that they are invading schools to brainwash America's youngsters.

Some fun updates: The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund is circulating an open letter to Kerns (hint: it's not a letter of support) that you are invited to sign, if you so please. It already has about 827,000 signatures.

In more gossipy news, Perez Hilton is reporting that Kern's son is actually gay (I guess the gays are infiltrating her family, too!) and that the lawmaker has lied about receiving death threats.

Last, Ellen Degeneres took it upon herself to call Kern on her show this week. Kern didn't pick up, but it was still a funny segment.

I take offense

I take offense that I may be one of the only ones that took offense to her statement that "Islam" (as a whole apparently) is a big problem and that it automatically has to be linked to terrorism.

I find it a bit curious as well that the Islamic community hasn't responded to her.

I, as a gay man, don't really have a lot of recourse when hate speach is hurled at me - and religious leaders tend to do it a lot. But Muslims in this country may have more of a legal leg to stand on if they want to take her on.

Because the same hate-crimes legislation and freedom of religion clauses that apply to her also apply to Islam. But it may be that Islamic leaders don't want to be seen to identify with "the homosexual agenda" - that whole "strange-bedfellows" thing.

I got a huge kick out of that Ellen bit! But it also really blows my mind that this thing is so huge now-- I work with Victory Fund and helped make that "I'm listening" video that got this whole thing going the other day. We never thought it would get this big, but the hits on our website just keep coming.
