Presenting: the only piece I've ever read by Jonah Goldberg that I pretty much agree with, despite its sometimes sloppy analogies. It's actually a topic I've written on at some length elsewhere since I find it so aggravating how journalists give so-called centrists like Joe Lieberman and John McCain free passes.
You're dissing Lieberman and McCain? But they're mavericks! They're members of the "radical center!" Etcetera etcetera!
I agree with generally the sentiment of what Goldberg is saying, and I really find it disgusting that people turn middle-of-the-road into middle-of-the-road-ism. People who say "well, the left and the right both are correct on some things and incorrect on others" and that's where their political analysis ends. They try to feel morally and politically superior, "above the fray," without ever having to stand for anything, other than not rocking the boat. Pathetic, like yellow lines and dead armadillos.
Coincidentally, the negative depiction of centrism (as embodied in Goldberg's piece) is seen as basis for criticizing liberals here*, effectively demonizing them as power-hungry fringe crazies. Damned if you do, damned if you don't?
Not to mention the basis of Tom DeLay's farewell address...Link
