Tuesday’s entry highlighted all that DC has over New York City, however, the DC cupcake scene merits a blog post of its own.

On my last trip to nyc I was dragged to The Magnolia Bakery and told that waiting in the 45 minute line which wrapped around Bleecker and 11th streets was a small price to pay for the best cupcakes in the world.  I was nearly salivating as I anxiously awaited the sweet crumbs that even impatient New Yorkers (including skeletal Sex and the City characters)  are willing to stand in line for.

My experience at the Magnolia Bakery was anti-climatic.  DC has crappy pizza, so-so sushi, and absolutely no place to get a decent bagel.  However, hungry Manhattanites willing to go to extremes to get a quality sugar fix are missing out.  Magnolia’s cupcakes are good, but they don’t even compare to a DC cupcake.

When I tasted one of the blissful cupcakes from CakeLove Bakery’s, LoveCafé, I understood one of the many meanings of true love.  At LoveCafé, passion comes in the form of decadently baked sweetness.  Such happiness, as fleeting as it may be, can be bought at only $3 a mini-cake. There are over eleven flavors—I’m a sucker for anything with Amaretto or Peanut Butter buttercream.  There’s even a cupcake bar—at which you can have a cupcake catered to your specific frosting, topping, and cake preferences.

Last year, during the month of October, LoveCafé was running a special promotion during which customers wearing a LoveCafé t-shirt received a free cupcake.  A previously mentioned frugal friend of mine—sported a Love Café t-shirt every morning over his white-collared work clothes and started his day off right with the tastiest cupcakes around. LoveCafé cupcakes are so good that this penny-pinching friend began paying for his cupcakes once the promotion was over.

LoveCafé has the best cupcakes in town, but the cupcakes at Heller’s Bakery in Mt. Pleasant rival Magnolia’s.  You can also get some decent sweets at Firehook Bakery—a DC chain.

other options

CakeLove is one option among many. Not to say they are not tasty, but I have heard so many complaints over the years of CakeLove hype that they are too dry and crumbly. Personally, I think they are good, just not outstanding.

By far, the very best cupcakes being made in the area right now come from a baker named Justin at BakeshopDC ( Link ) He is running a small, independent operation, and you can find his delicious things at Murky Coffee among others, and he takes orders.

For vegans (and non-vegans, of course), Sticky Fingers is another great choice!

DCist also recently did a roundup of cupcake reviews which got a lot of reader feedback: Link

In support of CakeLove, at the Silver Spring store they are now offering a variety of baking and cake decorating classes, which seems like fun!

Chocolate Happy Hour

Also, every Wednesday night Cake Love has a chocolate happy hour, which means you get 1/3 off all cake slices with chocolate in them. So in the end, the cake is only overpriced instead of drastically overpriced.
