As you walk to and from work in the sweltering heat this week, be glad that you’re not Andy Roddick. The tennis pro, and former boyfriend of Mandy Moore, is here in town for the Legg Mason Tennis Classic—DC’s annual professional tennis tournament. Catch up on what you missed last weekend here.
The Legg Mason Tennis Classic has been part of the US Open Series since July of 1969, when tennis legend Arthur Ashe played in the first “Washington Star International.” This was the first professional tennis tournament held in the US outside of the US Open, and due to Ashe’s insistence, it was fully integrated. What started as a major tournament played on a few clay courts in Rock Creek Park while spectators looked on from temporary bleachers has evolved into a major tournament with a world class facility—the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center. Designed for both professional and public use, the Fitzgerald Center was the first urban tennis facility of its kind.
Though most of the “good” (re: expensive) seats have long sold out, single session tickets are still available for the tournament, which lasts through Sunday. Along with Andy Roddick, stars participating in the tournament include Tomas Zib, Paul Goldstein, and Marat Safin.
Special events this weekend include the 22nd annual Howie Grunfeld Wheelchair Tennis Tournament. Also, ESPN fans can go see their favorite tennis commentators Friday though Sunday as they broadcast the final rounds of the tournament. See you there!
