In my last post, I (hopefully) helped you feel a bit more at home in the world of local spectator sports.  This time around, I’ve got the goods for those of you who prefer to get into the game yourselves.  If you can handle the heat, Washington, DC offers quite the array of athletic leagues and events.  Details after the jump.

Softball: The classic summer sport is extremely common around the district, with many Hill offices and large non-profits boasting a team or two.  Always a good way to settle political differences: challenging those liberals or conservatives on the diamond.  Check with your offices to see if you can join the team!

Kickball: If you’re 21 or over, joining the world of adult kickball provides a golden opportunity to return to the joys of childhood.  DCKickball’s summer league starts in mid-July, or if you’re afraid of commitment, check out their Kickball Open on July 28th!

Frisbee: For those of you who enjoy throwing and catching large discs, I must unfortunately note that the summer leagues for 2007 have already been formed.  But it’s not too late to join in the Washington Area Frisbee Club’s charity tournament on Saturday, June 16th!

Etc: If you’re not interested in an organized sporting experience, you’ve still got options.  Though its leagues run counter to summer scheduling constraints, the DC Jewish Community Center offers athletic memberships on a month-to-month basis.  Balance Gym has daily rates for pick-up basketball. And, if you’re truly seat-of-your-pants, I have a friend who tells me that there are always pick-up soccer games on the Mall for anyone to slide in and join.

Have fun! Wear sunscreen! And please feel free to comment on anything I may have missed.
