It’s almost the end of the work-week, but from what I can tell through my window the weather looks a little less than ideal. Here’s a thought—why not stay home tonight, rent a movie, order some pizza, and make a night of it?
Truth be told, I have been waiting all month long for the opportunity to make this relevant: ladies and gentlemen, I hope you will enjoy this exercise in listing, and feel free to add, suggest, or critique in the comments!
Logistics to Consider:
Blockbuster Video—locations in Logan Circle and Adams Morgan.
DC Library—Many branches throughout the city.
Good Pizza—Scroll down, you’ll know when you see it.
What makes a sports movie great? After an informal online straw poll (aka soliciting suggestions from friends via g-chat), I’ve determined that it depends who you ask. Some of my female friends enjoy it when sports movies feature romance. Feel free to snort. Personally, I want my sports movies action-packed, tough, and with just the right amount of cheese. Kind of like my pizzas. So here we go, with a first take at what I’m sure will be a controversial list of classics in the sports movie genre (in chronological order):
Bull Durham: (1988) the earliest in a trifecta of Kevin Costner baseball movies
Field of Dreams: (1989) Costner, this time getting mystical
Necessary Roughness: (1991) bonus points for spotting presidential candidate Fred Thompson
White Men Can’t Jump: (1992) if you like lots of profanity, this one’s for you
A League of Their Own (1992) there’s no crying in baseball, and there’s no whining about this movie being on the list!
The Sandlot (1993) Takes us all back to the days of childhood fun
Blue Chips (1994) Can't beat Shaq’s film debut!
When We Were Kings (1996) Oscar winning documentary about Ali and Foreman’s “Rumble in the Jungle”
For Love of the Game: (1998) still Costner, as a washed up player with one last shot
He Got Game (1998) starring new Boston Celtic Ray Allen
Jerry Maguire (1998) too bad Tom Cruise is nuts, this used to be one of my faves
That’s hardly a comprehensive list, folks, but I have to go home! Let me know what I missed!
