A heaping plate of eggs, sausage and bacon, a bagel, three muffins and coffee would have been a fine breakfast on any other day. So why is this day unlike all other days, as we Jews like to ask on Passover? Because it’s the Free Food-A-Thon, and 1,500-calorie meals just don’t make the cut without some fresh fruit to top it off.
So where do you head when you want some morning melon? Where else but the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority national conference! As a 20 year-old white guy, I didn’t really fit in with the mostly middle-aged African-American women in line for a mid-morning snack, but there’s something about cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon that transcends age, race and gender. No one seemed to mind that I went heavy on the melon while leaving the browning pineapple to those who followed me. I even took the last strawberry from the display. I’ve never been all that into Greek life, but if Zeta Phi Beta starts a chapter at Yale, I’m rushing!
