Going to "that jammy-jam"
Noun, meaning party. "Are you going to that jammy-jam?" "I sure am."
Popsicles
Especially the tube-freezie version. It's hot out and these are cold. 'Nuff said.
"Having a few beers"
Sure, it's a Wednesday night, but you're just going to have a few beers. Nothing wrong with having a few beers, right? Good spots for this: your couch, a roof deck or balcony. DC-specific: RFD (Regional Food and Drink) is home to DC's largest tap list and has a charming courtyard garden so you enjoy the evening breeze while sipping on a light, refreshing hefeweizen.
Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
A classic. Richman's throwback rock and roll is the perfect summer fare; look for songs like "Parties in the U.S.A," "Roadrunner," or their cover of "Back in the U.S.A" to get you in a 1965 beach party mood.
Sweating
Instead of being really embarrassed about showing up wherever you go looking like you ran through a sprinkler, embrace it. Wear only linen, pretend you live in a banana republic and spend your afternoon asleep--siesta!
City Lights of China
Caveat emptor, this is the best Chinese food restaurant--outside of Chinatown. Their willingness to saute almost anything, their vegetable of the month--don't miss out on Asparagus!--and brusque service are just a few of the highlights.
Outdoor Events
Whether it's Fort Reno or Screen on the Green, nothing beats getting some people together to catch some open-air entertainment. Hey, it's how the Greeks did it.
Penguin's Great Ideas imprint
These are books you should probably read anyways. But more importantly, they look really cool, with unique cover designs so you get extra bang for your pretentious reading buck. Con: Some are abridged, and that makes you feel dirty.
Director's Series
These might be old news, but talented directors + music videos = a real pleasant Sunday afternoon. Check out Michel Gondry's volume.
Pinball in Bars
I think the world is ripe for a pinball comeback. Check out the Black Cat's Red Room bar.
Bars with Roof Decks/Terraces
Despite the heat, drinking on top of buildings can be done comfortably once the sun goes down and is a crucial part of the DC summer experience. Some good spots to check out: Madam's Organ, Local 16, Brass Monkey, and The Reef.
