Nancy Pelosi

The chance that the House of Representatives switches Party control is extremely good. With Foleygate piling on as additional evidence of cover up and corruption, the debacle in Iraq, a soaring deficit, lack of accountability over the executive branch, and the rubber stamping of a corrupt regime, only continue to leave a bad taste in the mouths of the electorate. Even with those who openly admit to being supporters of our friends on the Right. November 8th could mean that we have the first female Speaker of the House in our nations history should an electoral tsunami unfold. By the way, what an incredible statement that is. Here we are a 200+ year old "democracy" that boasts itself to be the land of the free and we might just now, in 2006-2007, be on the cusp of a female Speaker of the House. I digress.

Now the chances of the United States Senate shifting power is less then likely, but still is a scenario that could unfold. That would mean that both chambers of congress would be under one Party rule with Democrats in charge. Needless to say the investigations will begin piling on rather quickly and they should. The likelihood of impeachment hearings in a Democratic controlled congress would be incredibly high, but I don't think, if this scenario were to unfold, that the focus would just be on George W. Bush. We joke that Vice President Cheney is the real President of the United States, when in fact; he is the most powerful Vice President in our nations history. Therefore, impeachment hearings for Darth Cheney are just as likely should enough evidence amount to an indictment. Mustering a 2/3rd majority to impeach in the senate would be a monumental task to say the least regardless of whether Democrats take it back or not, but hang with me a bit longer please.

Should impeachment of both the president and vice president occur, and according to the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, the Speaker of the House is 3rd in line to the presidency of the United States. That would mean that Nancy Pelosi would be the 1st female President of the United States. And should that occur it throws the 2008 nominations for the Democrats into utter chaos simply because incumbency would rest with President Pelosi. No doubt she would want to continue her role as Chief Executive of our country.

Everyone thinks that Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) or even Secretary of State Condolezza Rice will make a run for the highest office of our land, but I think we can unfortunately collectively agree either would fall well short of making that accomplishment a reality. But under the strangest of circumstances we could still have our first female president by default, and not the one everyone believes it could be.

Is this scenario likely to occur? I think not, but it is still fun to think outside the box.
