I recently read a very interesting article by David Shribman who argued that a recent poll conducted by The Gallup Organization reveals the essential ingredient for presidency and leadership as a whole: Courage.

The poll asked Americans to rate the top five presidents in history.

1. Abraham Lincoln

2. Ronald Reagan

3. JFK

4. Clinton

5. FDR

So the golden thread is difficult to see amongst these presidents as they all faced very different issues and are of diverse backgrounds and temperments. But as David pointed out, in their individual niches of history, they all showed courage in the face of the issues.

Let us all show a little courage as we face ours.

That's actually really disheartening

Its a poll of name recognition, not evaluating different presidents. There's no golden thread because its completely arbitrary...its just the handful of names that come to mind. I'm always amazed by how few people can answer basic questions about American history...and I'd bet a majority of respondents couldn't tell you when each of those Presidents was in power, besides the most recent/obvious ones.

Well that would depend on your perspective. Perhaps it is name recognition but why are these names so prominent in our minds? Why ARE they the best known presidents? I was commenting more on the article anyway than the actual poll:

I think the issue of courage amongst our leaders is an important one... but should be coupled with temperence which is the most lacking ingredient in our current administration (besides intelligence of course.)
