The panel I just dropped in on for had a pretty straight message: Dont be affraid to fight somebody. Its well known the right has a bit of a nasty streak and will crack your skull with a Louisville Slugger if you provoke them. This panel, which featured Mr. Kos himself as well as Hunter from the Daily Kos amung others, said fighting isnt unethical and dirty if you dont do it in an unethical and dirty way. Thats not a very revolutionary point but i think somtimes the general respect for humanity that progressive folks have gets in the way of the general meanness of political activism.

In a nut shell you can say Tom DeLay* is a greedy son of a bitch who would probably steal from orphans if given the chance but you can not say Dick Cheney obtains energy by feeding off of the souls of homosexuals and immigrants (at least until we get proof).

* I'm getting as many shots in as I can while people still know who Tom DeLay is.

...But I consider this a myth:

The Left and the Right fight about the same in politics, as far as dirtiness goes; the difference tends to be in the how, not in the level, and has little to do with the "respect for humanity" of progressives but rather the different structures of power in each movement.

I think this is a not-so-deserved pat on the back for progressives that I hear tossed around a lot; "if we lose, it's because we're better people".

I just think that the left is much more concerned about being nice then the right. A prime example, which was briefly discussed in the panel, is media bias.

The left gets very defensive about anybody saying theres a liberal media bias but when Fox News is brought up, the right is either tongue in cheek about it or they flat out dont give a shit and change the subject.

And dont get me wrong, I think the left is losing right now because it is a scattered mess with no organization. But its nice to see the left getting a bit sassy (See Al Franken).

That's funny... with media bias I see two sides of the same coin. The conservatives claim there's a liberal media bias and cherrypick stories to show how the media is slanted to the Left. Liberals complain that the media is actually Bush-apologist/"corporatist" and cherrypick stories to show how they think the media is slanted against the left.

The right uses the phrase "LLM" for "Lying Liberal Media", and the left uses the phrase "RWCM" for "Right Wing Controlled Media" or SCLM for "So-Called Liberal Media".

In the end, the media slants neither left nor right; its biases are institutional and structural rather than explicitly or simply ideological.

FOX is neither liberal nor conservative - it's the media arm of the Republican party.

Also, examples can similarly be cited on the left; the NYT, for instance?

I agree 110%.. you see the self-censoring of the media all too often because as Colbert says, reality has a well-known liberal bias
