To George W. Bush: Please Don't Divide Our Nation Anymore

Dear President Bush,

I believe that you are sincere and earnest in your faith and beliefs. I may disagree with nearly every one of your positions and policies, but I do not doubt your convictions (or intelligence). Except, perhaps, your commitment to be a uniter not a divider.

Upon your reelection, you chose to renominate seven judges whom half the country have sincere reservations. Rather than rapidly confirming noncontroversial judges, you allowed the Senate leader to pursue some of your most controversial judges. This led our country to the brink of a nuclear option that would have changed a long Senate tradition.

What's more, some of your nominees were used to create a bitter division in our country. There was no denying that some--perhaps not yourself--would use these nominees for just that purpose. Yet you chose to nominate them anyway without consulting your Democratic Senators who represent more people than their GOP colleagues. That is not uniting our already polarized nation.

As you contemplate a new Supreme Court nominee, you have a choice. You can do what you did upon reelection and push our country into a long, bitter and divisive battle, or you can consult some of your Democratic Senators and get a nominee promptly confirmed. The choice is yours.

As you recently mentioned, our country is in war. The war deserves our attention and our brave soldiers deserve our strong support. I hope you give our Senators a chance to focus on the security of our country rather than bitter and needless partisan fighting. Furthermore, our country has racked up record budget and trade deficits that threaten our country's long term stability and security. Surely, these issues are of more concern to our Senators than a provoked partisan battle.

I hope that you live up to your promise to unite our country and give me reason to believe you were sincere when you said you would. In the course of your prayers and meditations, I call on you to act upon the words of Christ: "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

Throughout history, when our nation was deeply divided and wounded, we chose to make a more perfect union. In our troubling times, I hope we once again choose to creat a more perfect union.

Sincerely,
GQMartinez

I don't see any good reason to be optimistic, however.
On the bright side ...

We'll be able to pump up our base the way the religious right has if Bush does nominate an absolute nut.

the far right winnger bush choses the better... It will only alienate the moderates even more than they already are...

Call me a semi-optimist looking at the bright side of what will likely happen...

(The semi-optimist = a half empty glass... But only because half of the beer is already in my belly...:)

HIC!
