Staff members described a celebratory mood inside the World Bank's headquarters near the White House, with people embracing, singing songs and hoisting flutes of Champagne.

It being Friday, your Campus Progress team will be heading down Pennsylvania Avenue to party with these boisterous Frenchmen.

Uh......

You mean a bunch of corrupt bankers are celebrating his departure, and this is a GOOD thing?!?!?

Sure, Wolfowitz was a neo-con hack but that does not mean we should take pleasure in his removal as head of an organization that was fighting his anti-corruption reforms. Think with your head and not your emotions please.

Mike, Thanks for the great advice on how I should think! Here's my advice back -- Irony: Look into it. As much as I thought that Wolfowitz was the wrong leader for the bank, I thought that a bunch of international finance people drinking champagne from flutes at the office on the day of Wolfowitz's departure was kind of in bad taste and an excercise in unintentional self-parody. Just in case you're still unclear: We're not actually going over there today.

OK, that sounded too mean. Sorry, Mike. It wasn't so obvious that I was joking, either in my post or in my comment. Have a good weekend.

The World Bank is not "a bunch of corrupt bankers". They're overwhelmingly people who could be making far more in the private sector, but instead choose lower salaries in order to enter public service. World Bank economists are some of the best our country has to offer, not only in terms of intelligence but in terms of character.

That's kind of shocking. I didn't expect champagne to be a result of his departure!
