No More Tuition For Some Stanford Students

Stanford is joining a growing list of schools rolling out big-time tuition-relief plans:

In a radical change to its financial aid program, Stanford University will announce today that it will no longer charge tuition to students whose families earn less than $100,000 a year.

In addition, the university will waive room and board fees for students whose families earn less than $60,000 a year.

Good news, yes, but this trend has been limited mostly to top-tier schools. (via reddit)

It's about time

for these Ivy league beasts to do this - their endowment certainly allows for it.

But really, what will make the most difference is increases to funding for state schools that directly go to reducing tuition, especially for middle- and low-income students. If you grow up in a working-class family, state schools should be free.

That, I imagine, will be a harder fight.

There is also some concern that schools that cannot afford to do this will start using their institutional aid money to compete for wealthier students. It's effect on overall college affordability isn't quite clear yet, although it is great for students wanting and able to attend these schools.
