Editorial cartoonist Ted Rall is currently soliciting support for a lawsuit against the until now, unaccountable Ann Coulter. As we have seen from the remarkable coverage of the CPAC, her hateful rhetoric is becoming widely accepted by the Right. Although she has a right to make such hateful comments, when she flat-out lies we do have legal recourse.

From Ted Rall's website:

Republican columnist Ann Coulter spoke earlier today to the Conservative Political Action Committee, where the audience included 1000 right-wingers including Vice President Dick Cheney. There, among other things, she is reported to have said the following:

"Iran is soliciting cartoons on the Holocaust. So far, only Ted Rall, Garry Trudeau, and the NY Times have made submissions."

She lied. I have not submitted anything to any Iranian publication. I have no intention of doing so. And I have said that in public, repeatedly.

. . .

To vote YES, please email chet@rall.com along with a solemn pledge stating the amount of financial support you are willing to contribute to support my legal challenge to Coulter's libelous statement.

If enough YES votes come in with enough serious pledges, I'll see Ann in court. If not, well, chalk up another victory for the Right.

I think you all know what to do! Pledge your support and a modest donation to help the effort at confronting Ann Coulter's unchecked aggression!

Sorry...

...I only donate to causes that legally have a chance.

As much as I hate Coulter, it's pretty clear that the line was intended as a joke. A stupid joke, but a joke.

Not to mention that Ted Rall clearly meets the definition of a "public figure", thus making the legal bar that much higher to clear.

Even a public figure can have standing for a suit if the information was known to be false and was released with malicious intent, I believe. Besides, the legal issue is only a fraction of the fun: the media coverage is what would be entertaining (you want to see that "raghead" comment make the rounds? This is probably both the fastest and most effective way to do it.)

But even more fun is the fact that Ann committed a felony in voting illegally down here in Florida. I'm looking forward to how this plays out....Link
