Trail of Destruction

As focus turns from war-torn Iraq to "energy-independence-seeking" Iran, Americans will once again be asked to foot the bill (but not if you are wealthy - you need a tax cut!).

When Israeli/U.S. warplanes begin dropping bombs on Iran, will Iraq fade to the back pages of the news as has Afghanistan? With the corporate media coverage of Iraq at this sorry state already, it's difficult to imagine that not occurring.

A trail of devastation to make sure no one can stop American imperialism. But what happens when OPEC and Chavez are sick of selling us oil and decide to sell it all to the much friendlier China or India? What happens when the oil stops flowing and America is just another "third world" country? Does our military have what it takes to take on the world to protect our future? What happens when China modernizes their military and ours is busy setting up puppet democracies in the Middle East? Why does the media play the role of Goebbels and only tell Americans what the President wants them to hear?

Oil...

...is largely a fungible commodity. This is something China is finally beginning to come to terms with.

Oh, and America is not an empire, nor do we harbor imperial ambitions.

That said, it is possible that Iraq might be pushed to the back page if we took action against Iran.

I don't know where you get your definition of empire:

From dictionary.com
1. A political unit having an extensive territory or comprising a number of territories or nations and ruled by a single supreme authority.
2. The territory included in such a unit.
2. An extensive enterprise under a unified authority: a publishing empire.
3. Imperial or imperialistic sovereignty, domination, or control: “There is a growing sense that the course of empire is shifting toward the... Asians” (James Traub).

So, just because we don't have an "emperor" (arguable), does not mean we are not an empire. We own territories like Guam, we now occupy Afghanistan and Iraq indefinitely, we are a supreme authority over nations in NATO, and we are an extensive enterprise under a unified authority. GW has asserted our imperial or imperialistic sovereignty, domination and control by shunning the world community to pursue its own militaristic goals.
