There were two films which caught me off guard last year. I lost faith in Hollywood long ago when I couldn’t spend a night at my local movie theatre without paying ten dollars to watch either a hackneyed prequel/sequel or a film produced by a budget that invested more money in its CGI Team than its screenwriter. The few times I went to the movies last year, I was pleasantly surprised.

The following are two trailers of two films that were released in 2006. Two films that instantly became lifetime favorites of mine. Two films overlooked by the Academy. Two films you tragically won’t see tonight if you tune into the Oscars.

Bobby

Robert Kennedy. Emilio Estevez. Anthony Hopkins. Martin Sheen. Lindsay Lohan. I looked forward to the release of this film since the moment I heard of its merits- a year before I saw the first screening in Manhattan. Not only does the film revolve around a historical figure most revered by yours truly but the cast includes many of the stars I grew up watching.

That said, this film’s importance does not stop at its personal appeals to Joe Seago. This is a true American epic. This film is important for every American. This film is important for our nation, our time and most of all important for my generation- a generation long deprived of such aggressive idealism and inspiring eloquence found in Robert Kennedy.

Without labeling Bobby a flawless film, I am stunned that the Academy overlooked such a masterpiece.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints

I only learned of this film through subway posters and decided to catch the flick on a free night last summer in midtown. I went in cold and came out hot with emotion. This film hit home for me on several levels. Based on Dito Montiel’s novel of the same name, the truthful aspect of this film heightens its emotional intensity. All who struggle with their past will relate to this beautiful piece of art.

Once again, why a film like this wasn’t nominated is beyond me.

On the other hand, you will see Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers and Al Gore tonight. Two things I greatly applaud and look forward to.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that films like that receive less notice, but they often are nominated for other awards, like in the case of a Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, that are intended for indie films. I am upset I haven't been able to see it yet...it was actually filmed and takes place in the area where I grew up and just watching the preview got me really excited. A few people I know who saw it, said it was amazing too.

I also really want to see the one on Bobby as well..I need to catch up on my movies lol.

And I'm def excited that Gore's film was nominated, although I don't know if it will make too much difference to some people anyway because Hollywood is already considered crazy and liberal anyway.
