I haven't been back to blog for awhile, but if you don't read ColorLines magazine, either in print or online, I recommend you check it out.  They also have a great blog, RaceWire (notable bloggers for them include Adrienne Marie Brown, Jeff Chang, and Andrea Batista Schlesinger)

The latest issue had a particularly relevant article to CP this month: "The Rise of the Ghetto-Fabulous Party" - about the increasing number of parties where students come in blackface and/or come depicting offensive racial stereotypes toward Blacks and Latinos.  CP's own blog had a number of posts denouncing these parties, and I like ColorLine's article that examines the recent rise of these parties.

At the University of Michigan, a "Pimps and Hoes"-themed party was ridiculously popular.  What's the update on your campus?

ghetto fab parties? in the words of yale laxers: "siiiiiiiiiiiiick"

great article to link to madhu (you've been repping color lines for a while now). i just sent king and leonard's article to other members of the Coalition for Campus Unity here at Yale (the group got started after a series - make that, a lot - of "insensitive" events on campus from emails threatening gays to posters denigrating the Prophet Muhammad to articles insulting Asians). pimps and hoes parties, ghetto fab parties, etc. are not hard to come by at this campus where lily-white students from privileged backgrounds are fond of labeling the entire city which surrounds them "a big black ghetto." i have a lot of fun going to parties and doing my whitest impression of the soulja boy dance, but all this racist nonsense has gotta stop.

Agreed that this is a serious problem.

Random note, oddly enough? The Soulja Boy dance never really made it out to Cali, because everyone was Leaning Like A Cholo this summer. Link

That said, it's hard to know where exactly to draw the line here. "Pimps and Hos", for instance, doesn't necessarily tie into racial minorities - it is the oldest profession after all.

I've seen pimp and ho parties in plenty of places, and poor kids (of all ethnicities) run em too - it's got less to do with rich kids flaunting their privilege and more to do with the desire to have a party packed with scantily-clad women. :)
