Bad? Brilliant?

As you might know from reading Funding our Future, Campus Progress is extremely critical of the American Clean Energy and Security Act that passed in the House a couple of weeks ago, but we still supported its passing and encouraged you to take action. We realize that might be somewhat confusing, so here are some of the reasons for our tepid support:

Good:

  • Last minute addition of equity provisions to train low-income and disadvantaged communities
  • Sets the framework for a climate mitigation strategy
  • Gives us something to bring to Copenhagen negotiations

Bad:

  • Lavish support for polluters,
  • Insufficient emission reduction timelines
  • Weak renewable energy deployment requirements and investments
  • Repeals the EPA's ability to regulate coal power plants.

It might seem that the bad possibly outweigh the good, but we are hoping that this bill will be strengthened in the Senate. Mostly though, we are counting on YOU to be loud during the congressional recesses in August in demanding that your Senator take a stance in support of strengthening it. Without you and your vocal support, President Obama will never receive a bill that will truly solve this pressing crisis.

Keep an eye out for our August Recess Toolkit and action alerts, and keep on pushing for more!
