The world's largest electricity importer, a nation famous for its sun-drenched olive trees and sailing tradition, decided to turn to Nuclear to supply its increasingly expensive grid.

Soon after announcing a transition from petroleum to coal combustion (which will definitely NOT help us meet our Kyoto goal), Italy decided to venture into another imported, highly expensive 'solution' to our energy problems.

Nuclear is a 20 year investment that is fundamentally dependent on government subsidies. The Italian Nuclear program started early in the Post-War reconstruction era, but ended ubrubtly 30 years ago over safety fears and rising costs. Itailans voted in constitutional referendum.

The newly elected government already repeatedly showed to be thuroughly opposed to environmental regulatiion, and hence, the health and safety of the people. They will once again lead Italy into a period of higher deficits due to insane investments in Nuclear and other regressive fiscal and environmental policies. As long as climate change and sustainability doesn't become a priority for Italian (and all nation's politicians), we can kiss our precious traditions goodbie.
