For too many years previous generations have allowed our pollution economy to continue to exacerbate social, economic and environmental inequalities in the world. It is time for our generation to take a stance and protect our future from droughts, floods, stronger storms, spread of tropical diseases, and, yes, the death of the polar bear.

The Energy Action Coalition, of which Campus Progress is a partner, launched PowerVote, a campaign to build a 1,000,000 youth movement to stop the most pressing issue of our generation

Check out this cool youtube video and witness the passion and enthusiasms of students involved in this movement.

This is what we stand for:

Power Vote Pledge

 Candidates and Officials,

Our generation needs a brand new vision for our future. We need to lead the world towards a just, clean energy economy that moves beyond dirty energy, creates green jobs for all, and secures our climate. I pledge to vote, hold our leaders accountable through my sustained involvement, and create a Power Shift!

1. GREEN JOBS NOW

Invest in millions of new green jobs, strengthen the American middle class and create new pathways out of poverty for millions more. By retooling our factories, revamping our schools, and rebuilding our communities, we can create a sustainable, just, and prosperous future for all.

2. INVEST IN A CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY

Unleash American ingenuity and launch a new wave of affordable clean energy technology. We need more federal and private investments in public transit, ultra-efficient vehicles, and renewable energy like wind and solar.

3. CUT GLOBAL WARMING POLLUTION NOW

To ensure our health, prosperity, and security, scientists tell us we must rapidly drive US global warming pollution towards zero. We can and must accomplish this transition to a clean energy future in an equitable and just manner.

4. END OUR DEPENDENCE ON DIRTY ENERGY

Enact an immediate moratorium on new coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear plant construction and infrastructure, while phasing out existing plants and fossil fuel extraction and ensuring a just transition for the workforce and communities

5. RE-ENGAGE AS A LEADER IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Global warming requires a global solution. We must shift the focus of American foreign policy from military intervention to international cooperation and join the world in pursuing peace and international development, thereby offering assistance to vulnerable and impacted communities.

6. TAKE DIRTY MONEY OUT OF POLITICS

It's time to make government accountable to "We the People." Put voters first and refuse campaign contributions from dirty energy interests.

Comeon

As

A) A Progressive
and
B) Someone currently someone working on my degree in nuclear engineers

The statement that Nuclear energy is dirty has just ment this has lost all credibility.

After all the BEST forecast is that Wind energy could make up only 20% of our overall energy generation. Currently solar would technology requires a battery made from unobtainium to provide the rest of our energy needs during nighttime.

Here is a better question, with the 'immediate moratorium' what happens if we have a power shortage, should we live with electrical rationing or build more?

so, maybe wind power could only provide 20% of our current need. isn't it obvious that we should be working to reduce our need with better efficiency (i.e. compact fluorescents) and conservation? if we put the emphasis on personal and corporate responsibility instead of figuring out how to maintain the status quo, we might start seeing some real progress instead of just all the "green-washing" that is distracting most of us today.

Ryan and Superduperficial,

I am tired of writing responses to nuclear proponents on my posts. If you want to push your delayer arguments, go post on the Heartland's Institute blog. Engineers might think its a great idea, but economists, social scientists, and epidemiologists don't, so stop making that argument.

Secondly, efficiency alone can cut consumption by 40%, Concentrated Solar Thermal (no battery required, stop making that delayer point as well) another 30% and Wind 20%. If you want to make that last 10% nuclear, I can live with it.

And about your power shortage scenario, yes, especially if that means that we get to live on this planet preserving a decent standard of living without messing up our climate. If you are not willing to submit to a short energy ration period for the sake of prolonging human well-being for another 1,000 years and sparing suffering, death and migration to billions of people, then you are a sad, sad, selfish person.

Was going to let this slip, but i really can't at this point. You say "the BEST forecast" for wind, but that was just one study released by an extremely conservative government based on a technology that has received relatively (to nukes and fossil fuels) no support or R&D. Please don't bold empty value statements.

First, if you don't like some people's comments, don't make posts! They have a 1st amendment right to disagree with you, and you don't like people disagreeing with you, then keep your mouth shut.

Youth are the future...
By Payday Loan Advocate Nov 8th 2008 at 1:11 am EST (Updated Nov 8th 2008 at 1:11 am EST)
The future of our country lies on the youth today. The youth must be aware of the things that are happening around us. But sadly, some youths today don’t care much at all. They often waste their time on things that are not important like vices. Youth must now wake up because the future of this country lies on their hands.
