That beautiful speech - summed up in a headline: "Clinton Defends Wife's Abortion Remarks"

Check out the article here

Wasn't Clinton's point that a Democrat wanting to reduce America's abortion rate isn't news? That's just sensible? Incredible... But hey people care I guess

clnton's speech-- my humble opinion
By jamiawilson Jul 13th 2005 at 11:56 pm EDT
i had the privilege of hearing clinton's speech today as well as hillary's speech at the FPA conference where she pandered to the right... i am a supporter of the clintons and both are amazing speakers but i don't like their attempts to pander to the right and to play into the notion that family planning/choice is a subject that isn't supported by the majority of americans. i loved his speech today but i couldn't help but snicker...

if it looks like selling out and it smells like selling out call it selling out and don't be so defensive... i am allll about keeping abortion safe, legal, and rare, but i don't agree with people on our side legitimizing the anti-choice hardliner's arguments and spin tactics...

clinton and his wife are politicking and i know this... but i think there is a better way than to play up to the very side that attacks us with full force. that part of the speech pissed me off and sounded like all the other yawn-worthy compromise talk i hear from more and more progressives these days...

what is progressive about capitulating to the right?

stand up for choice.
Pandering or Communicating?
By student5 Jul 14th 2005 at 1:27 am EDT
I think what Clinton was pointing out when he used
Hilary's abortion comments as an example was that
understanding what insights the "other side" has
is a good thing.

Unfortunately, I am not sure that even the Campus
Progess Program followed this idea very closely.
Just look at the cartoons and negative personal
attacks used to describe conservative leaders.
Like Clinton said, it might be funny, sure, to
make fun of people you may disagree with.

But that's not true communication, it doesn't lead
to anything better, and it can even sideline the
real topic as the debate turns into a ridiculous
"food fight". Can you imagine how our reaction as
liberals might be to find a conservative student
group throwing names at the people we admire?

So when the Clintons, or any leader, want to reach
a hand out, it's clear that hardliners on both
sides will criticize them, just for trying to use
the "Golden Rule". Call it what you will, but it
doesn't change the fact that some Republicans for
the first time heard something a Clinton said.
